Wait, What? That's What Those Numbers Mean?

Funded Aug 6, 2023

This was my first experience writing a grant request and I was so taken aback by the fact that a random donor, who has no connection to me or my school, would be so open to giving the needed amount to fulfill my request!

I was so excited those first few weeks of school because I knew I had a secret package on the way for my students. Initially, we all had to line up in the library to sign out the older version of the TI-84 calculator. Supplies were limited and many of them were in rough shape (missing buttons, suffering from leaking batteries, damaged screens). Then the box arrived! My AP Statistics students learned quickly that I usually have some crazy activity or trick up my sleeve when I start my lecture by holding a non-descript box in my arms.

When I explained that we now had new, updated versions of graphing calculators to use in our classroom many were relieved. You see, in AP Stats, there is a lower proportion of mathematically driven students and I know a few of them were wondering how they could find a calculator to use during the AP Statistics exam approaching in May. They were already struggling to complete their assignments by sharing calculators in class and they knew online software would not be permitted during the exam.

Thank you so much for giving my students hope, the ability to be successful because of a more even playing field and most importantly knowing that there are people in the world that care. This act of kindness will not stop here. I know my students and I plan to find ways throughout our future to pay it forward.”

With gratitude,

Mrs. Varys
