Funded Aug 2, 2023Completing puzzles, whether they are jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, Sudoku, or brain teasers, can offer several benefits for students. These benefits go beyond just being an enjoyable pastime; they can have a positive impact on cognitive, emotional, and social development. Here are some of the benefits of completing puzzles for students:
Cognitive Skills:
Problem-Solving: Puzzles often require students to analyze, strategize, and think critically to find solutions. This can enhance their problem-solving skills.
Spatial Reasoning: Jigsaw puzzles, in particular, help improve spatial awareness and the ability to visualize how pieces fit together.
Logical Thinking: Puzzles often involve following a set of logical rules or patterns, which can improve logical reasoning.
Memory Enhancement:
Short-Term Memory: Completing puzzles, especially those like Sudoku or memory-based games, can improve short-term memory and the ability to recall information.
Focus and Concentration:
Attention Span: Puzzles require sustained attention and concentration, which can help students improve their focus and attention span.
Pattern Recognition:
Visual and Pattern Recognition: Working on puzzles can enhance a student's ability to recognize patterns and details, which can be useful in various academic subjects.
Math Skills:
Mathematical Concepts: Some puzzles, such as Sudoku or mathematical puzzles, can reinforce mathematical concepts and operations.
Language Skills:
Vocabulary and Spelling: Crossword puzzles can expand vocabulary and improve spelling skills.
Stress Reduction:
Relaxation: Engaging in puzzles can be a relaxing and stress-relieving activity, which can help students manage stress and anxiety.
Creativity:
Out-of-the-Box Thinking: Some puzzles encourage creative thinking and imaginative problem-solving.
Self-Esteem and Confidence:

Social Interaction:
Collaboration: Working on puzzles with others, whether in a classroom or social setting, promotes teamwork, communication, and social interaction.
Patience and Perseverance:
Persistence: Puzzles often require patience and persistence, teaching students the value of sticking with a problem until it's solved.
Entertainment and Relaxation:
Stress Relief: Puzzles can serve as a form of entertainment and relaxation, offering a break from the demands of school and other activities.
Digital Detox:
Completing physical puzzles can encourage students to take a break from screen time and engage in a hands-on, offline activity.
It's important to note that the type and complexity of puzzles can be adapted to suit a student's age, cognitive development, and personal interests. Puzzles should be used as a supplement to a well-rounded educational experience, providing a balance between learning and leisure.”

Funded Aug 6, 2023The use of art materials in high schools can have a positive impact on behavior and support for students in several ways. Art education and creative activities can be a powerful tool in promoting emotional and behavioral well-being among high school students. Here are some ways in which art materials have affected behavior and support students in Wasilla High School:
Stress Reduction: Engaging in creative activities with art materials, such as drawing, painting, or sculpture, has been a form of stress relief. It allows students to express themselves, relax, and reduce anxiety, which can, in turn, positively affect their behavior and overall emotional well-being.
Emotional Expression: Art provides a non-verbal outlet for students to express their emotions. This has been especially beneficial for students who may have difficulty communicating their feelings through words. Through their artwork, students can convey their emotions and experiences, which can help educators and counselors better understand and support them.
Improved Focus and Attention: Engaging in art activities often requires concentration and attention to detail. This has helped students improve their focus and attention span, which can translate to better behavior in the classroom.
Self-Esteem and Confidence: Successfully creating art can boost a student's self-esteem and self-confidence. When students feel a sense of accomplishment through their artwork, they are more likely to have a positive self-image, which has influenced their behavior in a positive way.
Problem-Solving Skills: Art often involves problem-solving, experimentation, and critical thinking. These skills can be applied to other areas of a student's life, helping them develop a more constructive approach to challenges and conflicts.
Social Interaction: Collaborative art projects and group activities encourage social interaction among students. Building positive relationships with peers can lead to better behavior in and outside the classroom.
Creativity and Innovation: Engaging with art materials fosters creativity and innovative thinking. Students have been encouraged to think creatively are more likely to approach problems and challenges with open minds, potentially reducing negative behavior patterns.
Coping Mechanisms: Art can serve as a healthy coping mechanism for dealing with stress, trauma, or difficult life experiences. Students have used art to process their emotions and experiences, which can lead to improved behavior as they find healthier ways to deal with life's challenges.
Enhanced Communication Skills: Creating art has improved the student's ability to communicate visually, which may help them express their thoughts and ideas more effectively.
With all of these benefits listed above, the Wasilla High School Behavior Support Program and it's students thank you!”
