Book Study

We finished The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane today. This book is perfect to teach plot and how characters change and learn. It's a story of loss, pain, hope and love. The story ends on love. But not before one of the characters, a boy named Bryce who loses his sister gives Edward, the China rabbit up to be mended. Bryce is a hero. And Edward, goes from no emotion in the world to his heart feeling loved to despair and lack of emotion or caring again and finally to love. The children are along for this ride. Yes it is sad, but books are a way to talk to kids because we will all encounter sadness in our lives.

As I read books that I have sets for, I have kids follow along. We stop and discuss vocabulary, where we are in the plot and how characters grow. Because kids can read along with me, they develop muscles in their eyes and learn what a fluent reader sounds like.

But the best thing they learn is that books are magic and take them to brand new places. Books help them see the world in a new way. And best of all, reading a book to a class bonds is together forever.”

With gratitude,
