  • Westward Ho!

    Funded Apr 16, 2025

Thank you so much for funding my "Westward Ho!" project. The students will be so excited to read these books. I promise that we'll work hard on reading, writing, and interacting with all the books and supplies that you helped fund my classroom. My students and I thank you for generous donation!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Welland

  • See, Touch, Use, & Understand!

    Funded Dec 28, 2024

Thank you for donating supplies to my classroom. We've put everything to use. We are in our money unit right now, so having the coins to move around and count has been beneficial, especially to the tactile learners who learn best by touching and manipulating the objects. The kids have read the global community books during Social Studies and also during independent reading time. The colorful, real-life illustrations bring the people of the world to life.

The magnetic erasers help us keep our whiteboard clean and ready for new learning. Finally, the Community Helpers Puzzle has been enjoyed by the kids if they arrive early to the classroom in the morning or if they get their work done and have some free time. It's fun to hear them talk about what they might want to be when they grow up!

I appreciate you buying things for my second graders! You are amazing!!”

  • Take a Deep Breath and Relax!

    Funded Sep 18, 2024

My students are really enjoying the items that I've added to our calm down corner. They arrive to the comfy chairs which stay clean thanks to the new washable slip covers. They set the sand timer for two minutes and enjoy the fidgets, books, and soothing water bubble colors. The reversible octopus can change from sad to happy, just like their feelings!

The short time alone, and in a quiet area, does the trick to get their mind re-focused and ready to join the class to learn. Thank you for your donation to my 2nd grade classroom!”

  • Global Read Aloud Books for a 2nd Grade Class- 2024

    Funded Jun 18, 2024

Thank you for the books for the Global Read Aloud project. It begins next week and we will read and study one book a week for the next six weeks. Along the way, we will connect with classes that are doing the same on the west & east coast as well as with 2nd graders in Canada & Thailand! We will study the themes of friendship & family.

One of the books is called "Built to Last" and we appreciate the Keva planks you donated so that we can also build things. After students get to school, they have about 10 minutes to get their desk ready for the day and then they can choose something to play with a friend. These blocks provide a challenge as they try and copy the pattern that is on the card but also provide a fun outlet to build with a friend.

This 2nd grade teacher & her students thank you for donating money to fund this project!”

  • In Our Spots- Ready to Learn!

    Funded Dec 11, 2023

Thank you for the carpet squares. They arrived in a big box and my students had wide eyes when I opened it and pulled them all out. They loved to pick a color and then find a place to sit while reading books or playing a partner game. Sometimes I laid them out for students to sit in a certain spot to help keep their attention focused and on the lesson. At indoor recess, they came in handy for students to build block towers on. They have stayed in great shape and I envision using these in my classroom for many more years to come. We love our classroom carpet squares!”

  • Global Read Aloud Books for Second Grade Class

    Funded Nov 2, 2023

Thank you for purchasing the Global Read Aloud books for us in the fall. We obtained all five of the books because of generous donors like you. We read and studied one a week for five weeks. They were all by the award-winning author, Jacqueline Woodson, and had wonderful themes and identities to discuss. We were able to reflect upon what we read in our Writing Journals.

Through the Global Read Aloud, we connected through Zoom with a class in Canada and North Carolina. We asked them what they thought about the book and also learned about their school and their community. We also emailed classes in Tanzania & Pakistan.

We shared pictures of artwork that we did after reading the books. We sent postcards to the classes as well. The kids loved the connections!

Even though the 2023 Global Read Aloud is over, these five books that you helped purchase remain on our classroom bookshelves. Just today, I saw a student pick the book "The Day You Begin" to read again. Thank you so much!”

  • Literacy Tools for Small Groups

    Funded Aug 3, 2023

Thank you very much for your contribution to my Donors Choose project. My students and I have loved using the Literacy Tools sent to us.

I meet with small groups daily to work on phonics skills. They have loved when I pull out the items. It adds novelty and fun to some of the skills we work on on a daily basis. The magnetic letters created a fun way to spell our target words verses writing them. The mini Magna Doodles also are a fun way to write the words and share them with others.

I was even able to use the finger lights with a whole class lesson. We turned down the lights for a two-minute reading drill and the kids got to read using fun-colored lights. One of my students exclaimed "that I was the best teacher ever!" Well..... Donors Choose helped make that happen. Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Welland
