A Seat of One's Own

Funded Aug 2, 2023

My students absolutely love having comfortable seating options in class. When the pillows, rugs, and bean bag chair first arrived, everyone wanted to try them out. I even considered moving some of my regular desks out of the classroom since nobody wanted to use them! But as time went on, the novelty wore off, and it was fascinating to watch as students naturally figured out what worked best for them. The vast majority of the time, students independently choose the seat that will help them be the most focused and productive--sometimes it's a comfy chair, sometimes it's not.

Before getting these materials, I had only one non-traditional seat in my classroom. That one chair became a distraction because it was unique, fun, and caused some jealousy. Now that I have a wider variety of options, I haven't had a single classroom dynamic issue regarding chairs. They have become simply functional furniture--tools, not toys.

My classroom setup now gives my students the freedom to be autonomous, the opportunity to show me they can make good choices on their own, and the flexibility to have different options. Thank you so much for donating to my project and helping me give my students a better environment for learning.”

With gratitude,
