Discovering Dystopia in Grade 8!

Thank you so much for helping fund this project! With your help, we were able to purchase enough copies of eleven different dystopian novels for my class' upcoming dystopian unit. My hope for this unit was to help students access the curriculum in new and inspiring ways through literary circles. These different books will allow students with varied reading levels and interests in meaningful ways, as I will be able to better differentiate to meet every student's needs.

I believe there is a safety in fiction, where students can explore hypothetical — although also incredibly real! — situations; they are able to challenge their beliefs, opinions, and understanding of the world in order to grow and learn, both as students and as human beings. Novels with dystopian settings typically hit "closer to home" for many students, as they often are able to recognize parts of their world on the page. With these new books that cater to their personal interests and reading levels, students will be able to access this curriculum in ways they haven't before.
