  • Balloon Dog Clay Sculptures on Display

    Funded Apr 27, 2024

We used the clay to make our balloon dogs and markers to decorate our thick paper for the dioramas. They got to design either a museum or landscape on their paper dioramas to display their balloon dog sculptures! We discussed how museums and artists work together to display artwork.

They were excited to see the clay! Students are always excited about clay, but they know how fun model magic can be! It's so easy to work with and as they say "like a fluffy marshmallow". Students followed a video step-by-step while I came around and helped and checked their progress. The paper is easy for them to make a diorama. They love making a 3D background with their own design inside! The thicker paper really helps the diorama hold it's shape, but is also easy to fold and cut. Most students were pleasantly surprised saying, "Wow, that was SO easy!"

This was our last project of the school year last year. Making those connections between being an artist and displaying artwork is a challenging concept for 4th graders. This project helps them understand how even 3D art has to be thought about and discussed to be on display. It also helps them think about where they personally would want their artwork displayed.”

  • Clay Spaceships With Diorama

    Funded Mar 27, 2024

My students were very excited to make their own spaceships as well as their dioramas! They commented on how easy the clay was to shape and create with and how well the markers looked on our paper for the dioramas.

Students got to choose what style of spaceship after we discussed some different types. Some students even made up their own! Some students took it a step forward and added tissue paper for their UFO beams of light or for their fire from their rockets.

Thank you for all you did to help foster their creativity with helping these students get the supplies they needed!”

    With gratitude,

  • Growing with Colorful Clay Flowers

    Funded Jun 7, 2023

Thank you for this opportunity for my students to use these supplies to make flowers out of clay inspired by the artist, Yayoi Kusama. They were able to use the markers in a new and fun way by injecting the color into the clay to mix their own colors. We discussed and mixed colors while talking about color theory. Students chose a primary color and a secondary color for their 2 pieces of clay. Then, students described and made each color into a sphere (larger for the petals). After looking at some of Kusama's flower sculptures, students decided and created their own flowers! Some students even turned their flowers into other things! Once dry they added details such as lines and shapes with a black permanent marker.

We worked together to photograph the artwork for their parents to see as well as anyone (if given permission) here: https://www.artsonia.com/artshow/35031/36652 Feel free to check out their creations. We will continue to add photographs of our artwork as students finish photographing their artwork. They can also add a title.

Thank you for giving them the materials they needed to learn about color mixing, Yayoi Kusama, flowers and sculpture! They were able to create their own pieces of art while learning about it. This project strengthens their depth of knowledge and understanding of sculpture, color and Yayoi Kusama. It also helps them feel invested in their own learning with the ability to make choices using all the supplies. They have been so excited to be able to take home their flower bowls!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Barlow
