Makerspace Makeover

Thanks to your generous support, Grade 6-8 students have access to a modern, safe, and easy to use wood planer. This replaces a very large, 50+ year old planer that was unsafe, incredibly loud, and not very effective one.

In teaching woodworking, I always begin with hand tools, and students did learn how to use a hand plane. I showed them that for some applications, this is still the preferred tool to use. For other jobs, such as leveling a cutting board or resurfacing old wood, the DeWalt planer that was donated does the job quickly and efficiently. What had previously taken weeks of hand planing (with many mistakes) could now be done perfectly in just a few seconds. Students immediately saw the results, and were eager to learn to use the machine.

My students and I are grateful for the donation of the DeWalt planer. It has improved the quality of their work considerably, and hopefully inspired a life long passion for woodworking.”
