Funded Aug 20, 2024Thanks to the generosity of donors, our classroom has been transformed with the addition of a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) mental health corner. This space, equipped with comfortable computer chairs and a mobile whiteboard, has quickly become a sanctuary for my students. We have integrated the corner into daily routines by starting mornings with guided SEL activities, where students reflect on their emotions and set intentions for the day. The mobile whiteboard has been instrumental for interactive lessons, allowing students to express their thoughts and engage in group discussions. One memorable moment was during a lesson on stress management; students took turns writing coping strategies on the board, fostering a sense of community and shared support.
The initial reactions to the new resources were heartwarming. When the students first saw the cozy chairs and whiteboard, their excitement was palpable. Many couldn't believe that such a welcoming space was theirs to use every day. One student remarked, "It feels like a special spot where we can actually think and talk." The immediate response confirmed what I hoped: the corner would become a valued part of our classroom environment.
This mental health corner has opened new possibilities for our ongoing lessons. Currently, we are working on a collaborative project where students create 'calm-down kits' filled with personalized items and strategies they find helpful for managing stress. The corner has become a testing ground for these techniques; students use it to practice mindfulness exercises and share feedback with their peers on what they found most effective. This has empowered them to take an active role in their emotional well-being and provided them with practical tools they can use outside of school.
As we move forward, the mental health corner will continue to evolve with our needs. The next step is incorporating peer-led sessions, where students can guide discussions and activities using the mobile whiteboard. This not only deepens their understanding of SEL concepts but also builds leadership and communication skills. The support from donors has not only enhanced our classroom but has had a profound impact on how my students view their emotional and mental health—as something that matters and deserves attention.”
With gratitude,
