All of my students love being read to. They become completely captivated with a book when they are merely listening. It is not uncommon for them to applaud when we are finished reading a story. They love books! However, when asked to read independently, many of my students have difficulty focusing their attention. They can decode the words in the book but they do not react to the author's humor, they don't get caught up in the suspense, they don't make predictions or sympathize with the characters. When my students read, either orally or silently, their voice lacks expression. They don't pick up on the emotions of the characters. Many of my students use the same monotone voice to read all character dialogue. They don't change their tone if a character is sad, excited or worried. Therefore, they miss much of the meaning of what they are reading.
