For The Love of Reading
Funded Apr 20, 2024Stories in books that relate to the life of the immigrant students and their families are an essential part of the learning process, especially during the early stages of adapting to a new place. The book that I selected, revealed survival skills learned through a long journey. It is possible that many of my students or their families went through the same or similar situations where the main character of this book, Enrique lived. The student learned to compare and contrast real life situations between characters and themselves.
Reading in my classroom is an enjoyable experience since all the advanced Spanish students in the class love to read out loud and get into character whenever it is suggested by the type of literature being read.
I thank you so much for donating the books for my students. In my class I have students newly arrived from Central America and other countries where survival is a daily struggle. They made a quick connection with the story in this book.”

Funded Apr 2, 2024I hope you are doing excellent. My Spanish 3 Honors class is very happy to have received all the materials needed for the project "Women Of Iron And Petals". The acrylic paint, the brushes and the canvas caused a lot of excitement in the classroom. I got excited the minute I found out that my project got funded. I had never incorporated painting in canvas in my lessons, only drawing and coloring with coloring pencils or markers.
I am not going to lie, I got a bit nervous because I had to organize the distribution of the materials and to make sure the students were not going to make a mess on their tables. My students were also nervous because some of them never hold a painting brush on their hands. Once they had sketched their drawings they were excited to start painting.
The class got quiet, everyone was so focused on painting. The students seem relaxed and calm. I only wish we had received the materials during the month of March to celebrate Women's month. We are learning about Argentina's Culture so the students painted a couple dancing Tango as they listened to famous tango music in the background. With your donation my students learned a new way of learning through art.”

Sunshine Reading
Funded Dec 8, 2023When I received the notification that a couple of warmed heart donors paid for my Sunshine project I got excited. I did not know yet which articles the "El Sol" magazine, and how they will impact my culture lessons. I received my order after the winter break and as soon as I opened my first pack of 33 magazines from the October-November issue I was able to dream of cultural lessons for both my Spanish 3 honors class and for my AP Spanish class. A few days later, I received my February-March issue pack with 66 magazines.
"El Sol" magazine is the perfect tool to use in combination with the unit's themes in the Spanish textbook. My Spanish 3 as well as my AP students are reading in the target language every day. The colorful videos that accompany the authentic articles reinforce the objectives established in the cultural lessons. For the AP Spanish and culture class the students had the great experience to connect their beauty and esthetics theme and expand their knowledge about the traditional crochet practice. The students had the opportunity to do research and to create paper huipils. My Spanish 3 did a virtual trip to Spain and wrote a letter based on the information read from and article in "El Sol".”
