Candy Core Drilling

Funded Feb 12, 2024

Thank you so much for helping to provide resources for my students and my classes! My students were super excited to see that we were going to be able to complete the Candy Core Drilling Lab that they have been so excited about.

For this lab, we gathered the different candy materials, and tried to "drill" into them using toothpicks. The students were able to see that some candies are easier to drill in than others. After "drilling" into them, we looked at the toothpicks under the microscope to see what the "minerals" looked like closer up. We then mixed up the toothpicks and used the microscopes to try and guess what toothpick came from what candy. The students loved this!

After completing our candy phenomenon, we tied our experience into Utah Roadcuts, and looked at the distribution of resources in Utah, along with what our landscape used to look like in the past. The students were able to get a peek into the difficulty of figuring out what minerals different roads in Utah are made of. My students loved this activity, thank you so much for making it possible for them!”

With gratitude,

Mrs. Crowley
