Hands-on Literacy
Funded Mar 22, 2023My students are using these different materials during all our reading times throughout the day. Specifically, we are using the elkonin boards and pop its during small-group time to decode and encode words based on the skills we are working on that day.
My students love to interact with new materials, especially ones that allow them to learn a new skill in a hands-on way. They love to see elkonin boxes during centers because we use them a lot during whole-group reading and they are familiar with how they work and their purpose.
The next steps for my students would be to extend on their reading knowledge and add more sounds to ones they already know in order to make longer words/words with harder reading skills.
We appreciate these materials more than words can describe!”

Beginning to Read
Funded Mar 31, 2023The donation of these books has allowed our kindergarteners to get individualized reading instruction. These books allow each teacher to work with a small group of students based on their needs in reading and reading skills.
In our classroom, every student is on a different level when it comes to reading. During center-time, I pull 4-5 kids that are on similar reading levels and work on a book with me. We start by working on the reading skill that is used in that days' book. Then, we practice words that contain that skill. Finally, we get to read the story and talk about the characters, setting, and plot.
In particular, my students that are reading above grade level will benefit the most from materials because they will get to extend their reading knowledge to work at a level that is still challenging to them. They will also get to be exposed to more stories through these books!
We are so thankful for the gift of these books! They will be used for many years!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Jackson
