No Fear Shakespeare, No Fear Students!
Funded May 15, 2023First and foremost, we want to send out our sincerest gratitude for your contribution to our No Fear, Shakespeare project! We began reading this Shakespearean play with a typical, modern textbook. Unfortunately, despite my many efforts to liven up the language, students were struggling. Only a few days into our new play, I could hear the exasperated sighs as they struggles to decipher the meaning from the archaic language used. I knew I was in for a tough unit, but I wanted to ensure that my students had the opportunity to enjoy the rich, complex meaning of a Shakespearean play.
Fastforward two weeks. I received a pleasant surprise that my books had been purchased and shipped thanks to your gracious donation. My texts had arrived and I was immensely excited to show my students. I passed them out at the beginning of class and told them about the wonderful strangers who contributed to their learning. They opened their books and their eyes immediately widened. My students were so sweet in their genuine responses. "This is going to be SO helpful, Mrs. Johnson" was heard multiple times throughout the room. The feelings of dread were quickly replaced with feelings of excitement and anticipation.
During our reading, students were able to read both the original and modern texts. By accessing the modern text, students were not only able to better understand the original Shakespearean language but were also to make modern connections to familiar themes of greed and ambition. Students discussed where concepts such as these can be found in modern times. We were even able to make some great connections to their current studies in history! Through this book, students had access to an enriching, valuable learning experience. Thank you so much for your generosity. I know it is an educational experience that will not be soon forgotten.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Johnson
