Funded Oct 11, 2023I am incredibly grateful for your generosity and donations to my first Donors Choose project. As an educator for over 20 years, I've primarily taught seniors in high school. It is always such an exciting experience to watch students prepare for the next phase of their lives. Whether that's college, vocational school, the military or the workforce, the preparation process is usually intense and requires motivation even from the most focused students. For the past two years, I've served as a College and Career Advisor in Richmond Public Schools. This opportunity has given me a front row seat to the steps required in creating a post-graduation plan with students.
Unlike previous classes, our Class of 2024 did not have the opportunity to learn about career options and pathways beginning their freshman year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our exploratory programming did not begin until last school year, their Junior year. As a result, deciding which path students want to pursue has taken a little longer than previous classes. I had the idea to create a welcoming space in my office allowing students to feel comfortable and cozy while researching careers, completing their applications and attending meetings. Teenagers love snacks and are typically motivated in group settings.
During the first semester, I was able to host several sessions in my office where groups of students could complete different post-graduate tasks: Resume Building, College Application Workshop and Scholarships and Sweets. The gift we received from our amazing donors really set the vibe (as the kids say lol) for a welcoming and motivating space for the students to focus on their applications. The hot cocoa was a hit, along with all of the snacks! I began to notice how the students started showing up on their own, laptops in hand and heading straight to the snack table before settling in to work on whatever application or task they were assigned.
I am truly thankful for this gift of comfort and joy you've given to my seniors. I can't wait to share all of their acceptances and offers with our donors in the coming months. We are so appreciative.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Paige
