Self-Motivated Students Seek Music Lessons

Funded Feb 23, 2023

I would like to first thank our donor's for their generous contributions! Because of this consideration, my students have forged new relationships, developed new skills and the confidence that comes that, as well as realizing that they can learn things outside the regular classroom. This latter component is important as this is an after school program.

We began many months ago although it feels like yesterday that I was able to share with my students the possibility of learning to make music for the rest of their lives. I recall the boxes of guitars being taken into my classroom during our last period. I can still see students so puzzled, so curious at such a rare instance. Those who knew were excited, but those who did not know very much wanted to know. Because of this, I gained another student for the program.

Since the guitar program is for students of all experience levels we began with a song that catered to such needs: Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here." This can be played various ways and is excellent as a duet. Soon after this, the students began taking charge of their own learning and choosing their own songs. Much of the joy that followed for me was getting to know their individual musical tastes. I now know even more music myself than I did before and I have both my Donors and students to thank for that.

Although we are all sad to see the school year end, we also look forward to coming back in September and sharing what we may have learned over the Summer. Because the more we learn over the Summer, the more we have to share with our group-mates in September. Perhaps students can begin to teach each other.

Thank you Donors Choose for making this all possible. And thank you Donors for your kindness.”

With gratitude,

Mr. Schaedler
