Funded Jan 5, 2024Although our original idea didn't work out, I was able to use the funds your generously donated in order to purchase other supplies and materials that would greatly impact my students literacy. One of the things that has made the biggest impact so far has been the color printer we were able to get! During the month of March, I have started to print out two decodable booklets for my students- one in English and one in Spanish. The parents have told me that their kids are so excited by the colors and the images in their booklets. Many Kindergarten teachers have an expectation for parents to read with their their kids at home, but a big problem is parents don't have access to reading material, and if they do, it isn't the adequately leveled for the Kindergartens to read easily. Now that I have spent the last month giving them daily reading material (40 booklets total) I have seen a spike in their reading ability! Whenever I had the booklets out at the end of the day, they happily start reading. I see them blending their sounds more confidently, and they are passing their SIPPS mastery tests (a reading program we have) so they are making strides towards being ready for 1st grade! In fact, one student's mom told me "my older daughter really struggled to learn to read. But my son is already reading. When we were in church, he was already reading all the names in the bible. All thanks to you." This would not have been possible without you. I cannot share my enthusiasm and gratitude enough.
Besides from the amazing printer which I use to print reading materials for the kids to practice reading with their parents, I was also able to acquire Pikachu headphones for the students to use on their school chromebooks. These Pikachu headphones get the students so excited to practice reading and math on their I-Ready program. It makes them feel so special every time they put the headphones on.
The last thing we were able to get was a part of the original project proposal. We were able to get different boardgames so the students can practice reading and math skills when it is center time. This is a special time during the day when the students get to interact with learning materials independently and in a hands-on type of way. Every time I tell them it it is center time the students yell "yayyy!," with glee.
I am so excited to see how this last month and a half of school will go for the kids. I am sure that your generous gift will continue to make a lasting impact on their education. Thank you so much for your gift to us. As you know, we are working within big limitations within the public education system- you have definitely given my current and future students more resources so they can reach any goal they propose for themselves. Thank you.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Teacher Steven
