  • Healthy, Sanitary, Learning Environment

    Funded Mar 9, 2024

It seems like a simple thing- but CLEANLINESS at school is SO important. I am happy to announce that during these first two months of school, our attendance has been up and I haven't been sick ONCE! :D This means that more students are present to get the learning they need to achieve their life goals and I am at 100% and able to give effective and energetic lessons. I thank you so much for supporting us at Lockwood. I am so grateful personally because there are so many little things that the district does not have the resources to provide and often times teachers like myself have to dig into our pockets to provide our students with what they need. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

    With gratitude,

  • Education in Neon Lights

    Funded Mar 16, 2024

I am so, so grateful for your donation to my students. You should have seen my class' reaction when I showed them the new neon lights. The good thing is that these neon lights will continue to bring joy and happiness to my classes for years and years to come! I am sorry I got this letter to you so late- I have been so busy with summer school and the new school year. I still have to go to Home Depot and buy some electrical equipment so I can wire the lights and get them shining. Once I do, I will get in contact with Donors Choose again so they can send you the newest pictures of the lights in my class! The environment is already looking so beautiful in general, and the kids are always happy to walk into my classroom. Thank you so much for creating a dream space for them!”

  • Color INK for Literacy!

    Funded Mar 9, 2024

Thank you so much for your generous gift to our class. Because of your gift I was able to print one decodable reader/story for my students every day up until the end of the year. At the end of class, I would tell my students that I had a present for them and I would lift the colored booklets in the air and they would all glee with excitement. I would remind them that reading is their secret power and that they should read with their parents so they could show them how much they knew already.

Because of your gift, and because I was able to create these additional materials for my students, my class got the highest scores in literacy this year out of all of the Kindergarten class! Many families do not have access to learning material, and if they do, oftentimes the material isn't suitable for the needs of Kindergarteners. These readings were colorful and I think this was key- the colorful pages and illustrations were able to somewhat compete for my student's attention with modern technology- television, tablets and phones- and so they were able to get additional educational value. Thank you so much for your gift.”

  • ¡Reading Tool!

    Funded Jan 5, 2024

Although our original idea didn't work out, I was able to use the funds your generously donated in order to purchase other supplies and materials that would greatly impact my students literacy. One of the things that has made the biggest impact so far has been the color printer we were able to get! During the month of March, I have started to print out two decodable booklets for my students- one in English and one in Spanish. The parents have told me that their kids are so excited by the colors and the images in their booklets. Many Kindergarten teachers have an expectation for parents to read with their their kids at home, but a big problem is parents don't have access to reading material, and if they do, it isn't the adequately leveled for the Kindergartens to read easily. Now that I have spent the last month giving them daily reading material (40 booklets total) I have seen a spike in their reading ability! Whenever I had the booklets out at the end of the day, they happily start reading. I see them blending their sounds more confidently, and they are passing their SIPPS mastery tests (a reading program we have) so they are making strides towards being ready for 1st grade! In fact, one student's mom told me "my older daughter really struggled to learn to read. But my son is already reading. When we were in church, he was already reading all the names in the bible. All thanks to you." This would not have been possible without you. I cannot share my enthusiasm and gratitude enough.

Besides from the amazing printer which I use to print reading materials for the kids to practice reading with their parents, I was also able to acquire Pikachu headphones for the students to use on their school chromebooks. These Pikachu headphones get the students so excited to practice reading and math on their I-Ready program. It makes them feel so special every time they put the headphones on.

The last thing we were able to get was a part of the original project proposal. We were able to get different boardgames so the students can practice reading and math skills when it is center time. This is a special time during the day when the students get to interact with learning materials independently and in a hands-on type of way. Every time I tell them it it is center time the students yell "yayyy!," with glee.

I am so excited to see how this last month and a half of school will go for the kids. I am sure that your generous gift will continue to make a lasting impact on their education. Thank you so much for your gift to us. As you know, we are working within big limitations within the public education system- you have definitely given my current and future students more resources so they can reach any goal they propose for themselves. Thank you.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Teacher Steven
