Science Lab Materials!
Funded Jan 20, 2023I am writing to share my gratitude for the classroom set of meter sticks which you contributed to. As a high school physics teacher, I am to provide my students with a hands-on experience that will refine their understanding. Though, this has been a recurring challenge. The students are accustomed to sitting in classrooms being supplied with information; however, I have imagined a different mindset. That is, students may gain more from their learning if they are instead given ways to actively interact with material.
The school I teach at is the KIPP DuBois Collegiate Academy in West Philadelphia. In our mission statement, we aim to provide students the "academic habits, sense of identity" necessary to navigate college and the workforce. To achieve this vision, more can be done to provide students not just with content knowledge, but also critical thinking and logical reasoning skills. Students should be encouraged to challenge themselves, wrap their minds around difficult problems. Only so much can be done to achieve this end with pencil and paper, which is why supplies like these meter sticks can be essential.
In general, these supplies are essential to performing measurements in physics. In exploring concepts through hands-on means, students gain both a new appreciation for material and a new appreciation for learning science itself. I am grateful for your support in achieving this goal.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Landsittel
