Inspiring a Love of Language Through Reading
Funded Oct 31, 2023I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for the generous grant that has played a pivotal role in transforming my classroom learning environment into a vibrant and welcoming space for my students.
Thanks to your donation, we were able to start creating a new library/reading nook that has become a cherished haven for my students. The comfortable chairs, bright rug, lamp, table, and an array of new books have made a significant impact on their overall experience. The students have embraced this space wholeheartedly, utilizing it for various purposes such as relaxation, collaborative projects, and, of course, indulging in the joy of reading.
The reading nook, in particular, has become a favorite spot for some of my more timid students who need a break from the craziness of high school. In the few months since it was set up, it has already served as a sanctuary for students seeking a moment of respite, whether after a challenging test, personal issues, or just a quiet space for them to read and relax. Others have used it for its main purpose, to pick up a book in French and immerse themselves in a new challenge. The majority of my students have spent time browsing the books and reading the backs to see which one they might want to try out, often surprising themselves with what they choose!
The initial reaction from the students was nothing short of awe and excitement. The corner has not only become a hub for my class but has also captured the attention and admiration of other students passing by. Their positive comments reflect the success of this endeavor and the positive impact it has had on not just my French class but our World Language wing. I can't wait to grow it more!
As we move forward, I am eager to continue growing the library and incorporating student feedback to ensure it remains a dynamic and inclusive resource. This semester, French 1 students will be using the children's books to practice their language skills, laying the foundation for a creative project where they will write their own books in French to read to middle schoolers. Additionally, my French 4 students will be partaking in a literature unit, reading and analyzing Le Petit Prince while my seniors will be reading fairy tales and poetry during our history unit, which includes stories and literary pieces from a variety of Francophone authors who learned French due to colonization.
None of this would have been possible without your generous support. Your commitment to education has made a lasting difference in the lives of our students, and for that, my students and I are truly grateful.
Once again, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Aouane
