Supporting Critical Thinking: Supplies for Philosophical Chairs & Socratic Seminars
Funded Aug 14, 2024The collaborative materials, especially the highlighters and dry-erase markers, have been a tremendous asset during our Philosophical Chairs and Socratic Seminars. These tools allow students to actively engage in discussions by marking key points in texts and annotating important ideas on the whiteboard during debates. For example, in a recent Philosophical Chairs session, students used highlighters to track arguments from different perspectives in an article, helping them organize their thoughts and respond with clarity. The dry-erase markers were equally beneficial, as students could outline key arguments on the board, which guided the flow of discussion and made the dialogue more structured and dynamic.
When students first saw these materials, they were eager to use them, recognizing how much they would enhance the depth and clarity of their discussions. The highlighters allowed them to annotate and focus on specific arguments during our Socratic Seminars, which helped them to better prepare for their responses. Moving forward, as we continue these discussions on complex topics from our current literature unit, these materials will be essential in fostering deeper analysis. The highlighters and markers will allow students to visually break down texts, organize their arguments, and participate more confidently in collaborative academic discourse.”

Funded Aug 7, 2024The addition of period products, deodorant, and toothbrushes has made a huge difference in my classroom, supporting students' personal hygiene needs and boosting their confidence. Many students rely on these essentials throughout the day, especially those who may not always have access to them at home. One memorable moment was during a group project when a student quietly approached me to express gratitude for the available period products. This small act of providing these items empowered her to stay focused on the lesson, participate fully, and not feel distracted by personal concerns. The simple presence of deodorant and toothbrushes has similarly allowed students to feel fresh and prepared for their day, which directly affects their focus and engagement in class.
When my students first saw these materials, they were visibly relieved and appreciative. Several commented on how thoughtful it was to have these supplies available, knowing they wouldn't have to worry if they were caught without something. The donations have created a supportive environment where students feel more at ease, which enhances their participation and focus on academics. As we move forward with our current project—peer-editing essays for our literature unit—the availability of these hygiene products will continue to contribute to their comfort and ability to stay engaged in their work. These resources ensure students can focus on learning without distractions from basic hygiene needs.”

Funded May 10, 2024The donation of note-taking materials, such as notebooks and pencils, has greatly enhanced our ability to implement Cornell Notes in my ERWC classroom. My students are now able to engage more deeply with the content by organizing their notes effectively during lectures and readings. Recently, we started a unit on rhetorical analysis, where students used their new notebooks to create detailed Cornell Notes on key rhetorical strategies. This method has not only helped them retain information better but also encouraged them to critically analyze and reflect on the material, improving their overall comprehension and engagement.
When the students first received the donated materials, their excitement was palpable. Many expressed relief at having the necessary tools to succeed in class without the worry of running out of supplies. The presence of these materials has significantly reduced stress and boosted their confidence in completing assignments. It was especially rewarding to see students who previously struggled with organization now eagerly participating in note-taking, knowing they have the right tools at their disposal.
Looking ahead, the next steps for my students involve applying their Cornell Notes to a research project on contemporary social issues. With their notes in hand, students will be better prepared to synthesize information from multiple sources and develop well-informed arguments in their essays. The donated materials have laid the foundation for these upcoming projects, ensuring that every student has the resources they need to succeed. The impact of these supplies will continue to be felt throughout the semester as students build on the skills they've developed through consistent, effective note-taking.”

Funded Mar 28, 2024Donating an in-class printer to a high school classroom has had a significant positive impact on students' academic experience. First and foremost, it has drastically improved the efficiency of assignments and projects. Students can now print their work immediately, allowing them to see the final product and make any necessary adjustments before submission. This instant access to printed materials has encouraged a higher level of attention to detail, as students can review their work in a tangible format, leading to improved quality of assignments.
Moreover, the in-class printer has enhanced collaborative learning. Group projects have become more streamlined, as students can easily print multiple copies of handouts, research materials, or presentations. This fosters a more dynamic learning environment where ideas can be shared and discussed with ease. The ability to print on demand has also encouraged creativity, with students feeling more confident to experiment with different formats and designs in their work, knowing they can quickly produce a printed version for feedback or presentation. This has been what my students were most excited to use the printer for! To bring their work to life!
Lastly, the convenience of having a printer in the classroom has reduced stress and increased productivity among students. No longer do they need to worry about finding a printer elsewhere, which can be particularly challenging for those without easy access to one at home. This has leveled the playing field, ensuring that all students, regardless of their personal resources, have equal opportunities to succeed.
By removing this barrier, the donation of an in-class printer has empowered students to focus more on their learning and less on logistical challenges, ultimately contributing to a more equitable and supportive academic environment.”

Funded Feb 23, 2024This is the first year since I have been teaching that I have taught The Great Gatsby. I remember being in high school and loving the book SO MUCH so, I wanted to share that with my students- who typically do not enjoy reading.
When I shared with them that they would have their own book, they were so excited! They are not used to having new books and have been captured by this classic story! As we near the end of our book, our students have fell in love with the story. It does not matter if we listen to do the audio book, reading groups, whole class reading or they are read to by me, they are so excited to continue the book.
This would have not been possible without your help and we are forever grateful! Thank you so much!”
