Calming Area

The materials in my calming area have helped in my classroom tremendously!

The calming area is a place where students can reset and be introspective. They explore their creative side with the scratch art. They use the mindfulness prompts with the colorful markers and pens to write and draw in their feelings notebooks. They use their problem solving skills to solve a puzzle that also helps fulfill sensory needs, and they are extremely proud when they are able to complete it! In addition, they use the breathing boards to help them return to a place where they can have a conversation about their needs. Lastly, they can do all of this with the comfort of the cozy rug and floor cushions.

Sometimes, a student is aware of their needs and they will ask for a break. Other times, I offer the time and space when emotions are running high. Mostly, it is a place where kids wind down at the end of a long school day or recenter after recess. Some of my favorite moments are when I see the focus during their self-chosen activity, or when a child comes back to their desk with a smile. Thank you so much for these impactful resources!”

With gratitude,
