Calming Area

Funded Jan 5, 2023

Thank you for your generous donation to make our calm corner a reality. The excitement about the various tools as well as the desire students have shown to use these tools throughout the day was apparent within minutes of the students being introduced to these additions to our classroom. There was a palpable rise in enthusiasm as soon as the items were presented in our class. While we often discuss methods in which we, as individuals, can regulate our emotions, this is the first time the students have freely had some of the tools available to them. There were audible "Ooohhhhs" and "Aaahhhhhs" as we were discussing the various items and how they were to be used.

After I finished showing the students the items and explaining the expectations for our Calm Corner, they instantly began using the materials and lining up/saying they were next to use the material. There was a desire to explore the materials more, but also a realization that there was space for them to take needed breaks for their self-regulation. Throughout the time that the calm corner has been available, students are able to find space for themselves when they are upset, overly excited, overstimulated, exhausted, or just need a reset.

While all of the items have been used and each student has their own favorites, they have also taken the time to explore various tools to see what is the right thing for them at the moment. Depending on the situation, students have tested out new tools to recenter themselves and some have found a tried and true tool for themselves. One of the most popular tools has been the kinetic sand. The students have various strategies for using the kinetic sand- some use the toys and build structures, others just hold it and let it fall and others try to form it into shapes in their hands. The overall usefulness of every tool and the skills that the students are learning in terms of regulating themselves allows for fewer emotional outbursts and space for students to feel comfortable expressing themselves. Thank you for your generosity in making this happen.”

With gratitude,
