Calming Area

Funded Jan 4, 2023

Since receiving the resources, my students have greatly benefited from them. We have created a calm down corner in the classroom where students have a safe space to self-regulate their emotions. My students have come into class in the mornings upset or anxious from their bus drive, and they know that they have a safe space in class where they can get back to a calm zone of regulation. The sensory bottles and sensory toys have helped them get their mind off of any upsetting feelings and gotten them back to a calm/ happy mental space.

During transitional times I use the wood chimes to call for the attention or to signal a mindfulness break after recess and lunch. My students enjoy the white-noise maker and lights that it projects in our classroom to set a calming mood/ environment that aides our social emotional learning and meditation videos. I plan to continue to explicitly teach social emotional learning and mindfulness next school year, as well as continue to utilize the resources provided to aide in our journey. My students will also continue to enjoy the fidget and sensory toys to meet their individual needs in the future.”

With gratitude,

Mr. Estrada
