Robot in Nature
Funded May 24, 2024This novel is truly bringing our living things science unit to life. We've just started our classroom novel study, and the excitement has been remarkable—each day, many of my students eagerly ask for just one more chapter! The Wild Robot by Peter Brown is guiding us on a journey of friendship while illustrating how our surroundings can enhance our understanding of animals and their adaptations. We will continue to use this book to foster critical thinking, improve reading comprehension and fluency, and ignite a passion for reading. I can't wait to delve deeper into the adventures of the robot and discover how she is able to adapt in unexpected ways.”

Funded Sep 11, 2023This project has brought a new sense of belonging in my classroom and has contributed greatly to providing my students a space to practice skills in self-calming an self-regulation that allows them to stay present in the learning taking place in the classroom. While this space was originally designed for students to take a needed break from the whole group, there are times where students use the space to get separate themselves from others so that they can complete their task or assignment with out distraction or interruptions. My students have helped me make the space a safe space to not only process the big emotions that arise sometimes, but also help them to focus on a specific assigned task.
My students enjoy the space many times throughout the day; when we are listening to calming music after recess to prepare our bodies and minds for learning, or during silent reading time. Three of my students use the space almost daily to complete tasks that are challenging, new and difficult. One of them has told me that the space helps her to think and makes her feel safe. Another one uses the space with the breathing ball to regulate his mind and body so that he can continue learning. This has become a very popular space in my classroom and is enjoyed by all the students in my class.”

Funded Aug 28, 2023This projected brought many smiles and joy to my students. I set up centers that students rotated though in small groups so that they could explore, play and learn how to use each of the activities. Exploring the world though play is powerful, and since my classroom is comprised of students from a variety of backgrounds, these activities helped them to work and play together regardless of language or academic ability. There were rich conversations about skills and concepts, and words of support and encouragement from all who participated.
The Magna Tiles and Marble Runs were the favorites. At the start of the rotation each group would try and build something as individuals, but would soon realizing that if they worked together their structures could be bigger and better. One group created a mini city with houses and cars that moved using Magna Tiles. It was amazing! The puzzles were the most challenging for my students. Because many of my students have not been exposed to puzzles before our day of play, they really had to extend their thinking and work though frustrations to build them.
As we move though the school year these activities, although they are toys, will be used as tools to support their understanding of math and science concepts like potential and kinetic energy, arrays and their relation to multiplication, as well as equivalent fractions.”
