Snacks for Singing and Dancing!
Funded Oct 4, 2023It's a Tuesday afternoon at 3:10 at Cascade View Elementary in Tukwila, WA. Disney Musicals after school program is beginning. 3rd, 4th and 5th graders, 30 in all, race to the playground for a 15 minute recess to release the energy they have built up all afternoon. The students are laughing, running and catching up with each other about their day. Even the teachers join in on shooting hoops with the children. 3:25- The whistle blows and we all go into the gym. Excited, the kids reach for their choice of snacks- Goldfish or Nutri-grain bars. Some want both but it's one per child per day so we can make it to the end of March. We let them choose which they want as some are crazy for Goldfish, some for Nutri-grain bars. They eat their snack ravenously. They haven't eaten since lunch and that was 3 hours ago.
Fully fueled and energy released we start our rehearsal for Lion King The Musical. The next 70 minutes will be singing, dancing and acting. And they will learn how to do all that as their assigned animal. Lions, hyenas, meerkats, mandrils, a warthog and a hornbill are magically being created in our gym.
For the next 3 months, these 30 students will reahearse every Tuesday and Thursday to prepare for the musical production of The Lion KIng. Costumes, props and scenery will also be created by the cast. The end of March they will perform at the High School for the community, at Cascade View for the school and they will perform one song from the show in downtown Seattle at The 5th Ave Theatre. Thank you for giving these students the energy they needed to create a fabulous production of The Lion King.”
With gratitude,
