• Handbells for 7th grade advisory!

• Gingerbread Houses Project

  Thank you so much for your heartfelt donations. My students were able to create amazing gingerbread house designs. They have a blast being creative and playful. Your donations enabled their creativity to come out and flourish. The students said "thank you very much for your donations. We had fun creating and using all the materials. We would not have been able to make these houses without the donations." The students had a fun winter time activity and this will probably become a tradition in our school.”

• Diverse Books!

• Middle School Safe and Welcoming Library!

  My students were incredibly excited to begin using the cushions during our reading time. They are more comfortable, taking breaks from the hard desks they have to use in every class and reading more! We use the cushions every single day during our reading block. My other classes have also benefitted by using the cushions during independent work time. The posters and rug have made our library more welcoming and the students want to spend more time in our small library.

  When the students saw the cushions, they asked if they could use them. I informed them that the cushions, the posters, and the rug came from donors. They were happy to feel love from the community.

  We plan to continue to use the cushions every day. The kids are also sharing with other classes and teachers about the materials received and are even asking other teachers to create projects so they can have cushions in all their classes.”

• 6th Grade Writers!

  My students are using the writing journals daily! We began with writing about ourselves to get to know each other better. We later developed those small prompts into larger ones that eventually led to the students writing a non-fiction narrative about a challenge in their lives. We have had two rounds of peer reviews where we used the pens to provide commentary in the form of positive feedback. The students love their journals, and we use the materials daily.!

  The 6th graders were excited and happy to receive their brand-new journals. They each picked the color they wanted and had time to draw on their journals to make it their own. They were especially touched that so many people donated materials for them to be successful.

  We will start Unit 2 this week. As we start a new unit, the kids will continue to use their journals. Unit 2 is titled Animal Allies, and we will use our journals to discuss our pets or the pets we would love to have. The kids will be reading about Jane Goodall, the Historical Fiction "Hachiko," and other texts about animals and humans interacting. Our journals will become evidence logs for quotes we might use in our end-of-unit essays.

• Books for 6th Graders!

  Our books arrived just in time for us to read and plan a field trip to the Italian American Museum to view the Pinocchio exhibit. Thanks to your donations, the students could become familiar enough to write compare and contrast essays between the story and different Pinocchio films.

  The students were excited to discover the written version of Pinocchio because it differs from the Disney version. The students loved connecting to different aspects of the story. We discussed the plot, theme, and characterization of the story. We were also able to have whole group as well as individual reading sessions.

  Thanks to your generous donation, our students are on their way to becoming lifelong readers.”
