Funded Jul 30, 2023My students are using the writing journals daily! We began with writing about ourselves to get to know each other better. We later developed those small prompts into larger ones that eventually led to the students writing a non-fiction narrative about a challenge in their lives. We have had two rounds of peer reviews where we used the pens to provide commentary in the form of positive feedback. The students love their journals, and we use the materials daily.!
The 6th graders were excited and happy to receive their brand-new journals. They each picked the color they wanted and had time to draw on their journals to make it their own. They were especially touched that so many people donated materials for them to be successful.
We will start Unit 2 this week. As we start a new unit, the kids will continue to use their journals. Unit 2 is titled Animal Allies, and we will use our journals to discuss our pets or the pets we would love to have. The kids will be reading about Jane Goodall, the Historical Fiction "Hachiko," and other texts about animals and humans interacting. Our journals will become evidence logs for quotes we might use in our end-of-unit essays.
Once again, THANK YOU for all your generosity and support!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Mendez
