Support the PS 889 Ceramics Program!
Funded Jan 23, 2024Thank you so much for supporting the ceramics program at P.S. 889! Students were thrilled to explore the new materials. Throughout our ceramics unit, students had the opportunity to learn about the history of ceramics, get inspired by ceramic artists, and use key vocabulary pertaining to sculpture and pottery. Students were fascinated and couldn't wait to get their hands dirty!
All of my students from second to fifth grade are creating and glazing a ceramics project thanks to your donation. They finally have the opportunity to practice essential hand-building techniques such as modeling different 3D shapes, slabs, coils, as well as techniques such as "slip and score" and glazing.
In our ceramics unit, second graders created pinch pots. Third graders created ceramic flowers in honor of spring. Fourth graders created abstract ceramic faces inspired by artist Kimmy Cantrell in honor of Black History Month. Fifth graders are now creating their self-portrait busts.
Thanks again for enriching my students' art education and expanding their horizons by donating to our ceramics program!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Kung
Elementary Artists in Need of an Inspiring Art Library!
Funded Nov 23, 2022My students have been thoroughly enjoying our new art room library! There are a wide range of "how to" books that students can choose from to help them with their art. These books have really helped students grow confidence in their drawing skills. I frequently hear students excitedly exclaim "look what I drew!" In particular, my 5th grade students Quinn and Brielle, who are interested Anime, frequently enjoy the simple step by step instructions found in the books.
Additionally, I use other books as read aloud texts for the whole class. They have really helped my students, from PreK to fifth grade, understand important art concepts, such as color theory and learning about shapes.
Lastly, the biographical books about artists have served as inspiration for some lovely art projects in my classes from first to fifth grades. For example, we've read about Frida Kahlo during our first grade self-portrait unit, as well as Alma Thomas' life and art during our second grade Black History Month unit.
Thanks again for funding my awesome art library!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Kung
