  • Classroom Graphic Novel Book Set

    Funded Aug 9, 2023

Students in my classroom read at a multitude of reading levels, and these graphic novels supported learners at EVERY level. Reading graphic novels exercises multiple parts of your brain and encourages comprehension at all levels for my readers, and has filled our classroom library with books my students actually want to read!

There are multiple English language learners in my classroom who rely on these graphic novels exclusively when we are reading together. They find them interesting and help with learning English!

I am so grateful that you took the time to donate to my classroom, it really means more than you know.”

    With gratitude,

    Mx. Pickle

  • Graphic Novels to Inspire Reading at All Levels!

    Funded Nov 30, 2022

First and foremost—I am grateful for your support of my public classroom and your continued support of the education profession. I cannot express my thanks enough for all you do for my little classroom community!

When we first received these books, my students were ecstatic. We do 20 minutes of silent reading on Friday's, and they are always on the search for the next best graphic novel. This has allowed them to never run out of things to read. Our graphic novel library is always checked out, always being read, and we even teach a few of them for whole-class instruction!

My seniors never actually read a "normal" novel. They learned their entire British Literature curriculum through graphic novels, including Dracula, Frankenstein, Macbeth, and now world mythology in conjunction with The Iliad! They love being able to see the characters, connect important events to emotions on character's faces, and point out the symbolism in the illustrations. We are even working on finding meaning between the panels (how do you know he walked there if they aren't showing us or telling us?).

My MLL students are especially grateful for the graphic novels donated to our room. As you can imagine, reading a book written entirely in English is hard to do when English is your second, third, or sometimes even their fourth language. The pictures can help them detect meaning without knowing exactly what the words might mean in the "normal" novels.

Additionally, my advanced students are appreciating the graphic novels. Graphic novels work many different parts of your brain, and the extension activities that come with analyzing a graphic novel are endless and forever rewarding.

I appreciate all you have done for my classroom and students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mx. Pickle
