I have the pleasure to teach 14 of the greatest 3rd graders in the heart of West Tampa. Many of my students come from a high poverty neighborhood, and take on more responsibilities that most students their age. My students’ guardians do not have the resources to provide books within the home, therefore the majority of their book discoveries take place in the classroom. The majority of my boys have a difficult time finding a book they would like to read. Then, once a student finds that great graphic novel, or sports book there is only one of them available. Resulting in the other students to become discouraged and unwilling to try out a different type of book. Third grade is the year many of our students make the change from learning to read to reading to learn. What better way to help than to provide books that will be of interest to these boys.
