Mindfulness Matters
Funded Sep 20, 2023Thank you so much for contributing to mindfulness in my classroom. Thanks to supporting my project mindfulness matters, students are learning, and practicing tools to become more mindful, connect to their own mental health, and attentively listen to their peers. All six graders have a calm strip on their planners and are queued as well as encouraged to utilize it whenever they need a moment to focus, check-in, etc. Breathing techniques and practices are one of the repeated activities in social studies this year and having the tactile component is so vital. I have used some of the materials from teachers pay teachers for our core values keychain project in addition to other identity, exploration materials. The students have really enjoyed the materials purchased from the gift card to teachers pay teachers. Every Tuesday, we meet in community Circle and I hope to continue to incorporate the mats in that capacity. Middle school is such a challenging time of life and having the opportunity to facilitate this kind of meaningful interaction of peers as possible because of your donations. Thank you so much for prioritizing social emotional learning and public school classrooms.”

Flexing Our Reading Muscles
Funded Nov 14, 2022Thank you so much for contributing to this project. One of my biggest goals this year was to build reading endurance for my seventh and eighth grade scholars. I am happy to report that we most certainly are doing just that. Built into my lesson plans are specific times in which scholars are utilizing the bean bags that you helped us to have in our classroom. The first opportunity is during dear time: drop everything and read. This is built-in to my weekly lesson plans for all of my seventh and eighth graders as a way to settle into the classroom or an option for when you finish your work early. The other time to use the beanbags is when we are doing our book studies – for example, the seventh grade is about to finish a wonderful novel called Code Talker (I highly recommend it by the way). Some students do best sitting at their desk, other students do best standing, leaning up against the window wall, other students do best if they can walk as they read — pacing back-and-forth. And then there are some that absolutely jump at the opportunity to get cozy in one of the bean bags that are classroom has.
Naturally, when the first students saw the gigantic boxes and help to unpack them, they were super excited to see what donors had contributed. Overtime that excitement has not diminished. A few of them will still eagerly look at me and ask can I get a beanbag out? To which I automatically nod yes and say go for it.
Because they are of high quality I anticipate these beanbags will be around for quite a while, and will be used for pretty much the same goal building endurance as readers. Whether it's a personal choice, book or a class study book, it's so much easier to settle and read when you feel comfortable.
Thank you so much for helping us build reading endurance!”
