During class discussions, they had the opportunity to see and interact with real self-care materials, making the lessons both enjoyable and highly engaging. Some of the materials were also sent home, allowing the students to continue practicing their self-care routines outside of school.

• Coffee Cart: Pushing Interaction and Independence

  The cart project has significantly enhanced our students' communication and socialization skills by providing them with practical, real-world experiences. Through the process of selling items using the cart, students have gained valuable opportunities to interact with peers, staff, and other members of the school community.

  By engaging in these sales activities, students have learned how to greet customers, engage in conversations, and practice active listening. This has not only improved their verbal communication skills but also boosted their confidence in interacting with others. The act of managing the cart, explaining products, and handling transactions has fostered a sense of responsibility and independence among them.

  Moreover, the cart project has created an environment where students can feel successful, receive positive feedback, and build self-esteem. As they see the direct results of their efforts—such as making a sale or receiving compliments—they become more motivated to continue communicating effectively and engaging with others.

  Candle molders" can have a significant impact on students with severe cognitive disabilities by providing a hands-on, sensory-rich activity that supports various aspects of their development. Here's a description of how using candle molders can be beneficial for these students:

  1. Enhancing Fine Motor Skills: Using candle molders involves tasks such as pouring melted wax, pressing molds, and releasing the finished candles. These activities help students practice fine motor coordination, strengthening muscles in their hands and fingers. This is especially valuable for students with severe cognitive disabilities, who may need targeted opportunities to develop these skills.

  2. Sensory Stimulation: Candle-making can be a multi-sensory experience that engages students' senses. The warmth of the melted wax, the texture of the molds, and the scent of the candles provide sensory input that can be soothing or stimulating, depending on individual needs. For many students with cognitive disabilities, this type of sensory activity can be both calming and engaging, helping them focus better during tasks.

• Independence in Folding Clothes

  The "Materials to Light Up Their Skills" project, featuring candle molders, has a transformative impact on my students with severe cognitive disabilities. These materials provide hands-on, sensory-based learning opportunities that are crucial for their development. By using the candle molders, students engage in a creative process that helps them build fine motor skills, improve hand-eye coordination, and follow multi-step directions, all while creating a tangible product they can be proud of.

  The process of making candles also promotes sensory exploration, as students experience different textures, temperatures, and scents. This can be especially calming and therapeutic for students who benefit from sensory activities. Additionally, it helps foster a sense of accomplishment and self-esteem as they see the results of their hard work.

  Beyond skill-building, this project introduces the idea of vocational skills training, offering students the opportunity to learn a craft that could translate into future job opportunities or hobbies. The candles they create can even become gifts or items for school fundraisers, fostering a sense of community and pride in their achievements.
