  • An Easy Goal To Meet -- Just Need A Net!

    Funded Dec 8, 2024

    It feels good to get everything in order ahead of time. We won't be playing floor hockey until later in the Spring trimester. But now we're set with the nets.

    We tested two and they fit the frames perfectly. Now we're working on building four more frames for the rest of the nets. And then we'll have the ability to run three games at a time which is enough for the size of classes we see.

    We expect the nets will last for years to come.

  • The Ultimate Ultimate Frisbee Unit

    As Winter Break rolls in, I reflect on the fun we've had in the Hazel Valley PE classes so far this year. Our Ultimate Frisbee unit was a great start to year! As a new PE teacher, it was fun for me to introduce a game and skill that was new to a lot of students.

    From what I understand, most schools only teach Frisbee with 3-5th grade because of the motor skills required to throw and catch a disc. However, thanks to the success of this campaign, we were able to use the special foam discs and play with the primary grades as well. And I'm happy to report that no one lost any teeth -- well, at least not due to a Frisbee injury.

  • No Dim Bulbs in This Classroom (Literally)

    Students were excited when the boxes of lights arrived. Students had choice in how to put them on the ceiling and we turned the installation into a classroom bonding moment. They had to use teamwork and afterwards it seemed as though they had more ownership over the space, wanting to keep it clean and welcoming.

    The lights are way better than the florescent in students opinions, and in mine. It feels cozy and safe and that's what my students were looking for.

    In the current unit we've been discussing how design choices can express values held by the designer. And we've been able to use these lights as a small personal example.
