  • Teen Care Closet

    Funded Oct 25, 2024

I cannot tell you the impact this care closet has had on my classes and the school community. Students bring their friends from other classes, and teachers come saying, "I heard you have... is that true? I have a student who needs..."

It has created a feeling amongst students that we teachers care about how they feel and what they need. What could be more important to a teen than proof that adults do understand?

Your contribution means that my teen students are not distracted by issues and problems that should be easily dispatched. Now they are.

Thanks so much for caring about the quality of these children's lives.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Walker

  • Ready for the School Year

    Funded Sep 18, 2024

I cannot thank you enough for your support! Your donations enabled me to stock our classroom with assorted items to keep us going throughout the fall with everyday learning activities.

In particular, my students enjoy working together in groups. For one group activity, we used the Sharpie flip chart markers to create posters on chart paper for keeping track of text evidence. The students took great pride in selecting colors and designing their posters. These quotes will be used to support their claims in argument essays.”

  • Fidget Friendly Chairs

    Funded Aug 9, 2024

My students cannot wait to get to their seats and your generosity made it happen! Thanks to these new chairs, even the itchiest, most restless students can sit comfortably. Sitting at a desk no longer feels like a trap. These chairs have upped the flexible seating style of our classroom and I see students selecting their seats according to their learning style. I see them swivel as they work and know that this little bit of movement contributes to their well-being and focus, which in turn contributes to their learning.”

  • Care Closet for High Schoolers

    Funded Jul 30, 2024

Seeing how my students have responded to the care closet in our classroom has been amazing! It has made a great impact on the feeling in my classroom. The first thing they learned about me as their teacher is that I care about their basic needs.

I have students advocating for themselves and their friends. They come for snacks, tissue packs, and fidgets. I see students using the lotion and sanitizer. They bring their friends! They tell me how cool it is that there are hats and socks. They know they can come to room 223 and get what they need.

These items have inspired other donations from my colleagues - sweatpants for when girls have period accidents, bandaids, and wipes for cleaning glasses. It has been incredible!”

  • Mid-Year Basic Supplies

    Funded Feb 18, 2024

There is so much that goes into a teacher's day. One of the stresses is the lack of supplies. It is difficult enough to manage curricula, behavior, testing, assessments, and so on, without also feeling the strain every time a student asks for another pencil or shows you an empty tissue box.

Your donations mean that I can focus on what is most important - learning. It also means that the stress and anxiety over resources does not spill out into my classroom and affect my students.

My students know that if they need something, it is there for them. There is no chiding or lecture about how they should have their own (when their families can not afford it) or an exasperated sigh (from a teacher who cannot afford infinite supplies from their own pocket). They get a "Sure, here you go," and a smile.

Your donations mean that my classroom runs smoothly and pleasantly, as it should.”

  • Graphic Novels for Reading Library

    Funded Oct 24, 2023

It is a simple but great pleasure for me to say, "Yes, of course!" whenever one of my students asks to borrow a book from our beautiful new library. Additionally, when they complete work early, I can show them a vast collection of beautiful and engaging graphic novels to choose from.

These books are grade-level appropriate material for teens who need picture support as their English proficiency develops. The topics are interesting and the characters are as diverse as my students. These books have opened a new world for them.”

  • Graphic Novels for MLL Literacy

    Funded Oct 18, 2023

As you might imagine it is tough to get teenagers to choose books over TikTok today. It is also tough for MLL students to find reading materials that suit them. For the level of language they understand, they may be stuck with baby books well below their interest level.

Graphic novels change the game, with visual artwork that appeals to teens and engages them. It offers MLL students picture support without the embarrassment of books for small children. Lastly, while there may be fewer words, the vocabulary, stories, and themes are grade-level appropriate and build their English and critical thinking skills.”

  • Flex Seating

    Funded Oct 17, 2023

My students were so excited to see the seating choices. They really enjoy choosing their own seats and styles of chairs and desks.

Choices are an opportunity for self-agency. This sense of self-agency helps build their confidence in who they are and the levels of respect and trust in our classroom.

It also aids in work completion and focus. When people are comfortable in their work station, they are more productive. The same is true for students.

One size or style does not fit all. Now because of your generosity - it doesn't have to!”

  • Fidgets for Focus

    Funded Oct 11, 2023

Introducing fidgets into my classroom has made a great difference. At first, the students were just excited to see these little gadgets. The different colors, sensations, and movements of the stress balls, bike chains, snakes, flip boxes, etc. inspired curiosity as they tried them out.

But soon each student found one that suited them and they settled down to work. The room was quieter and more productive. The difference was incredible!

This was the case throughout the day across all four grade levels. The best part was watching them put down their cell phones and pick up the brain-healthy fidgets!”
