Chess to Learn

Funded Oct 28, 2022

My students were consumed with excitement when the chess materials arrived. With intense focus, they hurried through their assignments for an opportunity to play a game. They couldn't believe that the project they help plan would finally be in full effect. The joy on their faces will be forever captured in my heart.

Playing chess offers numerous benefits for students. Chess improves memory, concentration and focus, and cognitive development. My students used chess to enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. By playing chess, the students were able to learn to analyze situations, evaluate options, and make strategic decisions. Playing chess in the classroom promotes logical reasoning, pattern recognition, and the ability to think ahead. My students were also able to promote chess to the entire student body by setting up chess matches in the courtyard during lunch. Chess became the center of attention as many students surrounded the players as they competed.

As a science teacher, I constantly think of new ways to engage my students. Right now, I plan to engage my students in an environmental project such as designing and implementing a recycling program, creating awareness campaigns, or starting a school garden to promote sustainable practices. Projects are fun ways to learn, but the rising cost of materials often serves as a barrier to many teachers. My students and I are immensely grateful to all who supported our project. Your support ignited the spark of learning while playing!”

With gratitude,

Ms. Honorat
