Why We Read...

Funded Dec 2, 2022

It has now been three months since I've been using the books in my classroom and I'd like to now take this opportunity to share with you the impact these books have had on my students and my classroom. The two books I received are very different, one is titled "Seedfolks" by Paul Fleischman and "Bronx Masquerade" by Nikki Grimes.

Reading Seedfolks help my students to better understand the concept of community and what it means for people of different background to come together for the greater good. As for Bronx Masquerade the lesson for my students in reading this book is to learn of the various forms one can use to express oneself, especially as it pertains to poetry. The skills learned in Seedfolks dealt with literary devices such as characterization, similes, metaphors and conflict to better understand author's purpose and characters motivations. With the Bronx Masquerade they learned about poetry which also includes similes and metaphors.

For their final project, students will work in teams to produce a free verse poetry on a theme discussed in one of the stories read in either Seedfolks or Bronx Masquerade, or produce a theme of their own. The objective of the project is to assess students' ability to apply the skills learned into their own work.

My students and I thank you once more for your donation.”

With gratitude,

Ms. A.
