  • The New New Art Teacher

    Funded Aug 8, 2023

As I started being a teacher last year, I really had no idea what I was getting into. And as an art teacher who taught over 20 separate classes in a week, I REALLY didn't know what I was getting into! Now that I have materials to help me organize these classes and prep so many separate things, things have been far smoother recently.

My favorite thing I got through Donors Choose is my large quantity paper cutter. I can now spend precious prep time getting lessons together instead of trying to cut materials for upwards of 700 every week. Art class is very material heavy, so cutting down on prep time is essential and wonderful!

Thank you so much for your help. My classroom is an easier space to be in and kids don't get confused about where things are or what they need to create successfully.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Osborne

  • Paul Revere's Artistic Career – a Look at Silversmithing

    Funded Feb 9, 2023

One of my favorite things about being an artist is understanding what it takes to create something cool. People in history didn't have the same technology we have to make art, so one of the best ways to show a little bit about what people go through is by showing students what they might need in order to replicate an artistic process.

Enter this Donors Choose project! My students and I talked about Paul Revere, and how he was a silversmith. While they were learning about the revolution, we talked about a process that would have been used back then. I had so many kids think it was really cool to take a step back in time to create their own little project. They have a new appreciation for how art gets made, and how science and art interact.

I'm so grateful we got to spend time learning a new process and learning a little more about how cool humans are throughout history! It helps connect us bit by bit and I'm glad I got to share that with my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Osborne

  • Crochet Club

    Funded Jul 20, 2023

I imagined introducing crochet resources into my classroom would be wonderful, but it's better than I could have ever anticipated!

Last year, I started offering "Crochet Club" as a reward for kids that always behaved and tried their best in my class. Some students stuck with it, even though they often got frustrated when they couldn't understand pattern abbreviations and had difficulty with accidentally un-plying traditional yarn. I was helping kids to see that (as an art teacher) there was more than one way to be creative. But upon realizing that I couldn't help all the students learn as a single person, I came to Donors Choose to ask for resources to help spread information.

I now have 30 kids coming in every week making little keychains and amigurumi with the resources I got from this project. The book I got breaks down pattern abbreviations and has step-by-step pictures to show how to do various stitches and knots. The "easy yarn" is meant for beginners and now the students can clearly see where their next step is and are learning correctly. I even have some students that have gotten so into crochet that they show me a new creation every week!

I am such a firm believer that creativity can come in many forms, and when you can do something that improves lives, like create a safe learning environment or a smile, the magic of being human helps you feel like part of the world. Thank you for helping me create a happy space for my students where they can grow and learn together.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Osborne
