  • Got Water?

    Funded Sep 29, 2022

Thank you so much for your generosity! We were able to give out water bottles to many of our runners and it's promoting the healthy habit of drinking water throughout the school day, as well as during practice.

This year, our school installed bottle filler water fountains. That is good timing for us as our runners can easily fill up their water bottles during the school day. As the we run into the winter months, the two public parks that we primarily practice at have closed their water fountains for the season. Having a water bottle during this time is especially important!

Thank you again for your kindness!”

  • Color Up!

    Funded Apr 7, 2022

Thank you so much for your generosity! The biggest hit-resource from this project was the face paint! In an effort to make races even more fun, we provided face paint for our runners and they definitely used it!

The first time we used it was for a championship cross country race. We won the borough championship but knew going into the city championship that we were underdogs to get even 3rd place. Our girls team used the face paint to write their team name on body parts like their legs. Several wrote positive messages on their arms to look back to while running, such as "I can do it!" In the end, we didn't place in the top 3 but it definitely helped our team mentally.

Now, we offer the face paint for our runners at every race!”

  • The Gift of Running

    Funded Mar 17, 2022

Thank you so much for your generosity! Most of the resources are gifts, and we distributed them during our end-of-year celebration party. One example was the picture frame that we gave to one of our runners who was leaving for another school in the fall. We put pictures of her that we had and she really appreciated the gift.

A resource we use often are the batons. We use them for our sprinting group to practice handoffs for the 4x200m relay and 4x100m relay. We currently don't have extremely fast sprinters but if we perfect the baton exchanges, then we will have a shot at top 3 at the important track & field meets!

Thank you again for providing our runners with these resources!”

  • Rain, Rain, Go Away!

    Funded Sep 17, 2022

Thank you so much for your donation! We will now have a way to keep our bags and other belongings dry in rainy weather. It’ll especially be helpful when we need to race on a grassy terrain and the area may be muddy. All of our things will be safe and clean!”

  • Spirited Away With Headbands!

    Funded Dec 23, 2021

Thank you so much for your kindness!

Some of our runners have enjoyed using the headbands so far! They were excited to have them, especially since they matched the yellow part of our team shirts and the color goes well with the main blue color of our shirts. The first race where they used the headbands turned out to be a race where it was pouring, and they learned that it isn't easy to wear a headband that is soaking wet. We didn't get much of a chance to use them for most of our races later in the spring because the weather was too hot to wear them and that would impede performance. We are hoping to resume using them for the late fall and winter races!”

  • Wake Me Up

    Funded Dec 22, 2021

    Thank you for your kindness!

Some of our runners are now able to have an alarm clock to make it to early morning races on time! The earliest meetup time we had for a race last season was 5:10 AM. We had a very early meetup time because because the race start time was 7:00 AM. Some of our runners who received the alarm clocks were able to use them to help them wake up on time. I know alarm clocks do help because there were a few students who weren't able to make the meetup time. I hope that these alarm clocks will also help then wake up early for other things in life too!”

  • "Watch" Me Run!

    Funded Dec 10, 2021

Thank you so much for your generosity!

Some of our runners need all the financial assistance that they can get, and having access to a free stopwatch is very helpful. The goal is to always make sure that money isn't a barrier to running for our runners.

Something that the stopwatches have been very helpful with is timing overall time during races. For most of the races we go to, it takes a while for the official results to be posted online. I think knowing your immediate time has the most impact when the kids reflect on the race.

Thank you again for your kindness!”

  • Running Splits!

    Funded Sep 28, 2021

Thank you so much for your generosity!

The kids have been taking turns using the lap memory watches for their training. It's good information to know about how well they paced themselves. We had a track & field meet recently, and a few of our students wore those watches for the relay and other events.

One event that they used the split lap memory function was the mile race. That race was unique because the course started in the stadium but went out onto the pavement and grass for a part. The kids used the watch to check their split at the halfway point and compared their times for the first and last half of the race.

Thank you again for your kindness!”

  • GPS: Find Me Running!

    Funded Nov 21, 2021

Thank you immensely for your kindness!

The high-tech Garmin Instinct watch has come in handy so much! At races, we would lend one student to use the watch. Because it has GPS capability, it can let the student know their mile pace. Awareness is a big key in running. You need know whether your pace is too slow, too fast, or just right. That'll determine how the rest of the race is run.

Another great benefit of the Garmin Instinct watch is for students to reflect on their long runs. Most recently, we ran over 3 miles on the streets to the Verrazano Bridge area and then to the subway station. The students find it really cool that the watch, matched with the app, can show you the course you ran. Not only that, but it shows the parts of the route where you ran slower or faster! It simply makes them more engaged, especially when we go on long runs around the neighborhood.

Thank you again for your generosity!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Kotung

"Running isn't about being fast. It's about how much you improve." Our emphasis isn't on what place they come in at a race but on their level of improvement compared to their previous race. I've been coaching for 10 years and our family team consists of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, as well as high schoolers who still run with us after graduating from our middle school. Our school is a title I school, meaning we serve the neediest students in this great city.
