Library books to celebrate Latino Heritage Month!
Funded Oct 18, 2023Thank you so much for your donation. I can't wait to read some of these during story time and share them all with our wonderful students! Your support is so greatly appreciated. It's important for our students to feel represented in the books they read and your donation goes a long way in that regard.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Ian

Funded Aug 15, 2023Thank you so much for funding this project! The school year just started and I've already been asked by many students when we will start recording again. They are very excited to get the project rolling and I can't wait to work on it, either.
I saw real improvement with many of the students last year in terms of increased confidence, language and communication skills, and tech literacy. I hope this school year they can work with me in the editing process to learn new software and create some really memorable audio of their time at this school!”
With gratitude,
Mr. Ian

Funded Nov 5, 2022Thank you so much for donating to this project at Global Family School. The new board games have been a hit. We think of the library here as not just books but as a meeting space and place to encourage learning in a variety of ways. Board games are great for our students because they are learning while playing.
The games we chose center literacy (Scrabble, Boggle), mathematics (Yahtzee, Mancala, Dominoes), and visual perception and spatial understanding (Kingdomino, Labyrinth, Set, Chess). And, of course, problem solving and social skills are a big part of all board games, both within the game and with learning how to settle disagreements.
The students have made great use of all the games. At recess and lunch they line up to play the games, and we're working together to learn all the rules and concepts of good sportsmanship. It has been a pleasure to see them so excited over these games and it wouldn't have been possible without your generous donation! Thank you again, from all of us at Global Family School in Oakland.”

Graphic Novels for a Dual Language School Library!
Funded Oct 23, 2022Thank you so much for your support of the Global Family Elementary School library. As a One-Way Dual Language Immersion (Spanish/English) school we are uniquely focused on literacy in English and Spanish. Comics and graphic novels have repeatedly been shown to be great motivational tools for both reluctant readers and English Language Learners. As our school is over 80% English Language Learners, it is crucial to our literacy mission to offer as many of these tools to our students as possible. Your donation has helped to boost our graphic novel section dramatically, and we are deeply thankful!
In addition to the literacy aspect, we also are trying to provide as many books as possible that the students can relate to. Representation in books is an ongoing issue, both in terms of who is being represented in the pages of the books and who is writing the books. In this regard there is still so much work to be done, however graphic novels have been shown to be outpacing other formats in terms of diversity. This is incredibly important to us as a school and, again, another great reason to boost our graphic novel section!
On top of all that heavy stuff, kids simply love graphic novels. They can't get enough of Dog Man and Raina Telgemeier and Owly! They derive so much joy from our graphic novels and that's the biggest thing of all, there's no learning without JOY!
Thank you all again so much for your donation.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Ian
