MS390 Orchestra!
Funded Dec 3, 2024Thank you for your donation! Because of you, I was able to purchase new bows, new strings, a printer, and a bass chair for my orchestra students at 390.
A new bow and new strings make a huge difference in the sound of a string instrument. Learning a string instrument is difficult, and a student that is able to produce a beautiful tone is more likely to continue their studies. New strings and new horsehair on the bow make an instrument literally sing! The instrument becomes more resonant, and one does not have to work quite as hard to make a good sound.
I now have a bass player in my orchestra who is much more comfortable in his new chair, and takes pride in the "special seat in the orchestra."
Lastly my new printer is able to produce copies of music for students to take home and practice.”

Funded Sep 11, 2024Thank you for the violin shoulder rests, cello and violin bows, and the wireless speaker. My violin students now play with better posture from the shoulder rests and better tone from the new bows. Playing a string instrument is difficult, but having these accessories makes achieving a good sound manageable. When students achieve a good sound, they are more motivated to play their instrument. The more they play, the better they become.
The students also appreciate that their new shoulder rests are purple. It's a small detail, but among the other shoulder rests which are black, these stand out. Having this vibrant color in their cases makes them more enticing. Many of my students try to get the instruments that have these special shoulder rests. It is my hope to replace all my shoulder rests with this specific brand!
Thank you for making these moments of joy and dedication in my music classroom possible!”

Funded Sep 22, 2023As a first year middle school orchestra teacher, I was very nervous about classroom teaching. I came from a background with 20 years of experience teaching one-to-one lessons where I had the time and ability to meet each individual child at their level and develop a plan that was tailored to their individual needs and ways of learning. The MOST essential technique for success in string playing is posture. Good posture leads to optimal sound while poor posture not only diminishes sound, but may lead to injury. With you generous funding, I was able to purchase shoulder rests for every student in my program. A shoulder rest minimizes the awkwardness of holding a violin on the body and frees up the left arm to play with ease and facility. As you will see in the following pictures, my students play with mostly beautiful posture!
The new violin strings that you have also helped me acquire for my students helps ensure the most vibrant sound. Many of my instruments were missing strings prior to your help. Now I can make most of the instruments in my room usable. Thank you for giving my students and my tenure at 390 a good start!”

Funded Oct 26, 2022We have really enjoyed using the resonator bells in our classroom. We have used them to see the pitches of the scale. The color coding and the changing size (length) of each bar makes it easier for the students to understand the concept of pitch.
They have discovered that the longer bars create lower pitches and the shorter bars create higher pitches.
They have also been able to train their fine motor skills. It is wonderful to watch them light up when they use their mallets. Thank you for giving my class this beautiful gift!”
