Small Group Math Learning
Funded Aug 9, 2022We are now 56 days into the school year! Time is flying by and the materials you helped me get for my students have been so beneficial! I work with 42 students from Kindergarten to Second grade. Despite the age difference one thing remains the same - children comprehend math more thoroughly and deeply when using hands-on tools. The number lines you purchased have really helped the second graders see how addition and subtraction is the same as jumping on a number line. The games you purchased helped my first graders become more engaged in learning. And the timer has helped them all stay focused and aware of when it is time to clean up and go. I have found the carry-all very helpful when traveling between classes since it gives me plenty of space for my plan book, math manipulatives, tools and my coffee mug! Your generosity has helped me work more successfully with my students and I am so grateful!”

Funded Dec 16, 2021Thank you so much for your generous donation. It has made a big impact in my class. The classroom I took over in September was previously a Chinese ESL classroom. There was not a single English book for my incoming students. I was able to get books from my school, however starting from scratch meant I took what I could get. I wasn't able to get my hands on any audiobooks.
In my experience, audiobooks are an amazing Literacy tool. They offer 'fairness' in reading. Many times, students will have interest in books that are too challenging for them to read. For children, not having access to books they are excited to read is 'not fair.' Audiobooks offer these children access to more challenging texts. They also introduce new vocabulary to the students in a context they can understand.
My students are enjoying these books on CD. I created a listening center and they have listening groups. Students take turn picking the book to listening to. They look forward to having access as much as possible!
Thank you so much for your thoughtful gift. It has enriched my students' lives.”

Math Literature
Funded Aug 12, 2021The Math Start books you helped purchase for my students are being put to good use! They are an active part of my class library. At first the students were confused by the concept of a math literature/reading book. They thought they would be more like workbooks than library books. However they were so pleased to see how far from workbooks they are!
The Math Start books come in different levels, which makes them approachable to all of my students. They also cover a variety of mathematical concepts and real world situations, making them compelling to all of my students.
My students and I are so appreciative of this generous gift! They are enjoying and will continue to enjoy these educational and engaging books.”

Funded Mar 1, 2021Thank you so very much for making my project a reality! Virtual learning had it's advantages but also it's drawbacks. One of the biggest issues I had was giving my students access to materials they would have easily had in the classroom. Most of my students did not have English books in their home, and some did not have any books in their home. It was challenging for me to assess their reading skills without books.
I also wanted to foster a love of books, which it not the same as reading from a screen! I wanted the children to hold books in their hand, practice turning the pages and looking at the illustrations. I wanted them to have books that belonged to them that they could read wherever and whenever, take care of and grow with. The virtual experience was not able to do this.
Thanks to your generosity each of my students was able to receive 25 books! The books were different levels so I was able to give each child books to meet their immediate need as well as books they could grow with. They were so excited and eager to take turns reading to the class. We used Flipgrid and the children recorded themselves reading a book. They then watched each other reading and were able to listen to books that they themselves didn't receive. We used the books to learn about characters, beginning middle and end, and picture clues. These books became a part of our virtual classroom.
Thank you again for making this possible. All children should have access to books and should be given a chance to love them!”

Math Can Still Be Hands-On!
Funded Jul 9, 2020Thank you so much for your generosity with my students and I. My students are Kindergarteners, with parents who have chosen remote learning for them. When I was given this class, my concern would be that the children wouldn't have access to materials we used in the classroom. I didn't want my students to rely on more online resources and more time looking at a screen. In addition, I wanted my students to be able to touch and feel the tools they were using so they could have a concrete experience.
Thanks to your generosity, my students were able to receive a sturdy bag with math tools inside that will last them throughout the year. They were so excited to receive the tools, and been using them already! For example, we just used the cubes to show ways to decompose a number. They built a tower of 4 cubes, then broke the tower to show 1 and 3, 2 and 2, or 3 and 1. We discussed how all of those show ways to make 4.
My students and I are so grateful for your kindness. In times like these, little gifts like math tools help the children feel some normalcy. They also help me feel like I am successfully reaching them, even remotely!”

Funded Feb 19, 2012Thank you so much for donating to my project and making this project possible! I am a math cluster teacher, which means I see 25 classrooms a week, grades K to 5. I play grade appropriate math games with each class. I use manipulatives and hands-on materials to help approach mathematical concepts in a new way.
These sorting materials will be used with my kindergarten and first grade classes. Such young students can be difficult because it is hard to find enough materials for so many little ones in a classroom, and sharing isn't always successful! In addition, they are having their first experiences with using hands-on manipulatives, so it is better to have more than enough manipulatives for the most successful learning experience. Thank you for not only supplying me with great materials, but enough to use with a full classroom of eager minds! The classes I have used the button sorting kits with have loved it. They've described it in the best way possible...fun!
I am so excited to have these for my kids! Thank you again!”

Funded Feb 18, 2012Thank you so much for your generous donation. The big books and sorting shapes you supplied me with have helped to motivate my students to learn math. I used the big books to introduce the attributes of each shape and the sorting kits to review the shapes taught and assess the student's additional needs.
The children looked forward to playing with the manipulatives, which increased their focus and attention span. In addition it helped them learn how to take turns, play in teams and share hands-on manipulatives.
Thank you again for your generosity. It is greatly appreciated by my students and I.”

Funded Dec 27, 2011Thank you so much for your generous donation. The computer games you supplied me with have helped to motivate my students to learn math. I use the interactive games instead of boring worksheets in order to review math skills and assess the student's needs. The interactive games cover a variety of mathematical skills including multiplication, division, fractions and money. These skills make them a great tool for test preparation as well.
The children look forward to playing the games, which increases their focus and attention span. In addition it helps them learn how to take turns, play in teams and support their teammates.
Thank you again for your generosity. It is greatly appreciated by my students and I.”

We Can't Take The Heat!
Funded Aug 20, 2008Thank you very much for funding my proposal! The heat in my classroom last school year was very hard to take for both myself and my students. It is difficult to expect children to be productive under such conditions. I am excited and looking forward to this year without this concern! I know these tower fans will provide relief and comfort for my students and I. Thank you for your generosity”

A Salute to Series!
Funded May 27, 2008Thank you very much for funding my proposal. I am excited to begin the next school year knowing that my library will be expanding and that I will have new, funny and interesting books to offer my students! I asked for these two series because I have seen, through experience, how much children love reading them. It is always easier to motivate students to read when there are books that peak their interest. Thank you for making that possible”
