Funded Nov 29, 2022Thank you so much for funding my project, which has enabled my classroom to engage in some new units and activities. First of all, I have been using the Math Warm-ups and Word Ladders books to support my students' learning, number sense, and spelling skills within our small-group math and reading classes. My students LOVE the word ladder activities and "Word Ladder Wednesdays" have become a part of our routine in reading class.
I used the class set of the novel A Long Walk to Water with my eighth-graders and they were moved by Salva's story and knowing that it was based on a true story really opened their eyes to global issues such as water scarcity and the impact of war on children. After reading the novel, each of them chose a topic related to the novel to research and write a five-paragraph essay about the effects of their chosen issue on individuals around the world. Two of my students chose to research refugee camps, one wrote about water scarcity, and another about the impact of war on children, among other meaningful topics. Therefore, having the novel allowed us to explore all sorts of topics beyond the plot of the book and engage in meaningful discussions!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Broudo
