Ecology & Food Justice Science Fair for South L.A.
Funded Mar 4, 2024I want to extend my gratitude for your generosity. To get a better picture of just how impactful your contributions were to my students, here are some direct quotes when I asked them, "What did this project mean for you?"
"I never knew the food I was eating was so bad for me and my family. I really want to encourage my family to eat more vegetables now."
"It was so fun growing plants. I feel like a real farmer now."
"I wish we had learned about this sooner. This is the stuff we need to know."
"I was so excited to come to school every day and measure my plant to see how much it grew."
"I asked my mom if we could put a garden in the empty space on the side of our house. She said yes so I am excited to plant seeds."
Not only did your contributions educate our children about the perils of food deserts and show them firsthand how to grow their own produce, you inspired a generation of urban farmers. We are already beginning plans with our Math department to do a follow up project in the fall where this group of students (who will be 8th graders by then), use geometry to design planter beds for the front of our school. Stay tuned!”
With gratitude,

Robotics for South LA
Funded Oct 5, 2022Our students have truly loved every moment they could get their hands on the robotics equipment we received due to your generous donations. Our 7th and 8th graders began by learning the basics of electric circuits and are now practicing high-school-level engineering to design, test, and analyze their own machines. Some groups are focusing on the kinetic energy output of their device, some groups are seeking to optimize for power, while another group has advanced to connecting their device to a solar cell to bring a sustainability lens to this project.
Seeing the joy in their eyes when their invention works is a sight to behold. Our students missed out on almost 2 years of hands-on STEM experience due to the pandemic. Thank you for giving them the opportunity to make up for lost time. We plan to extend our learning by experimenting with basic coding and learning how to program our robots with app software. This part of the process is new to me as well, so I am just as excited as my students are to dive in and learn!”
With gratitude,
Mr. Uribe
