Calming Area

Funded Feb 23, 2023

The calming center had an overall positive impact on both staff and teachers. Teachers appreciated having a space to send students who were emotionally overstimulated and needing a break from the classroom environment that wasn't a punitive space. They also appreciated the bright and colorful atmosphere it added to the lobbies of our offices. Students were happy to have a place that was created specifically for their comfort and well-being. In addition to having self-guided coping tools like fidget tools and coloring pages, students also received individual conferencing with an adult. This allowed students to receive direct instruction on socio-emotional skills like self-regulation as well as inform support staff which students require additional supports to be successful in an academic setting. I would recommend this model to any schools that are looking to implement school-wide healthy socio-emotional practices that honor student autonomy and encourage collaboration across faculty.”
