ESL Students Desire Standing Desks!
Funded Sep 4, 2022Every day my students come into class, sit at their seats, and raise their hands. They wait patiently and respectfully until I ask how I can help them. Most of the time, the first question asked is "May we use the standing desks?" I answer with "Of course you may," then the student smiles, jumps up, and gets to work.
When I first told the students I had a surprise for them, they were not really excited. I had them take guesses of what it could be. Typically, my surprises include small snacks, pencils, folders, or notebooks. When the day arrived and the tables were assembled, you could hear the joy and see the happiness in their eyes. A few students questioned why anyone would help them or help the school. Other students were shocked that a teacher would have these in their classroom. After an explanation- and a talk about respecting materials- I told the students that these tables were donated by lovely people in and around our community. Furthermore, the students felt so loved and grateful.
Currently, my students are working on the different verb tenses in the English language. The students love to stand up while I review the topics and before we get into our activities. We utilize the tables as much as possible. Sometimes I use them to set up stations, other times I make one table a 'true table' and the other a 'false table', and sometimes we just stand and talk at them. Every day the students use these tables, they help create a space that is theirs.
We truly appreciate your donation and love that you were able to bring happiness to our classroom.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Boltz
