Meeting Students Reading Need

This is the first time I created a project for books and was blown away how quickly it was funded. Reading opens the doors for students to excel in all the other subjects we teach as elementary teachers. This year our reading instruction shifted to phonics based in third grade. My class this year was sent up as an ENL (English as a New Language). As a result my instruction changed from previous years.

The books that were purchased focused on the early phonics instruction that many of my new students needed. I have been able to work with them in small group to reinforce the phonic instruction that is given to them with our phonics program we currently use. This has helped my newcomers so much. Not only are they speaking in English, but they are decoding the unknown words they are seeing and have moved into a transitioning state. They are able to go to the class library and not feel overwhelmed by the other books in my library that an average student would read. They have a book they can practice with at home that is just right for them.
