New Year, New Readers!
Funded Aug 3, 2023I cannot express how grateful I am! It just made my day to see that this project was funded. Reading is so fundamental, and our students are going to arrive in a few days to see so many new books. I am beyond thankful for the impact this will have!”

Funded May 25, 2023Thank you for your generosity in donating books for our students! Our teachers came back to work this week and were racing to choose books for their personal libraries. At the end of the year, students filled out surveys where they requested books for the libraries. Teachers are so excited to see that those books are now in their classrooms!
We will start reading intervention during the first week of school, and students will begin their journeys to become millionaires! KAN students become millionaires when they read one million words and pass quizzes to ensure they comprehended each book.
Many of our Black and Brown students have been able to see themselves more in literature and are starting to engage in conversations around books more often. We cannot wait to start this year off strong with students excited to read - and to have choice!! Thank you again for all of your donations!”

Funded Oct 1, 2022Thank you so much for all of your generous donations. Most importantly, these books have developed a love for reading and a curiosity to learn more. We have seen writing skills and vocabulary develop this year as students have been reading more. We were able to take 21 students on a field trip to celebrate them becoming "millionaires" - they each read over 1,000,000 words this year. I am writing this as students are taking their MAP test today, and their confidence in reading skills has skyrocketed. From experience I know that it takes one good book to turn a child who hates reading into a bookworm. Each dollar donated allowed us to fill our libraries with books that students now love - books that they see themselves in.
During intervention blocks, students read for 20-45 minutes each day depending on the schedule. While they read, teachers circulate the room conferencing with students about their books. It has been a joy to see students light up when they talk about a new character or a prediction they have for how the book is going to end. We have had many 6th graders attempt to read Harry Potter this year, and the whole class has gathered around them to celebrate when they pass the quizzes on the book. There have been so many happy moments with new books, and we are more than grateful!
One of our 6th graders, Seth, was a self-proclaimed hater of reading when he started this year. Through your donations, we have been able to hand select books that he seems interested in. Seth's teachers continued to purchase books for him with your donations, and he was one of the 21 students that read 1,000,000 words. A group of 8th graders also came together to read the Ghost series by Jason Reynolds. They have had so many fruitful conversations about seeing themselves in the books and how the themes can apply to their own lives as middle schoolers. I cannot say thank you enough. I strongly believe that all children deserve the opportunity to become strong readers, and we need access to great books in order to do that. We could not have done it without your generosity.”
