YA for Spanish
Funded Dec 10, 2024¡Buenos días! Thank you so much for donating to my YA for Spanish Project.
The students read 3 excerpts from the book How the García Girls Lost Their Accents by Julia Alvarez. They completed short constructed response activities and participated in discussions about the issues encountered in the excerpts. They learned about the journey of the García Family from the Dominican Republic to New York and the challenges that immigrants face as they acclimate to their new home.

Ya for Spanish Author Visit
Funded Dec 26, 2023Thank you so much for donating to our YA for Spanish Author Visit!!! You made this WONDERFUL event possible, and we are so grateful for your support. Our students were able to interact with the author of the book that we have been reading. They were so excited to see her and hear her story.
We spent an hour talking with Elisabet Velasquez over Zoom. We really enjoyed her presentation and the performance of her poetry. This was a truly amazing experience. She dramatically shared poems from the book and encouraged the students' participation throughout the presentation.
Our students read her book When We Make It. We started on January 12, and we met every week to discuss the assigned section. The students also had a writing assignment for each section of the book. They could respond to an issue addressed in the book, to a poem, a character, or an event. Their final assignment is a poem like the poetry included in the novel. They will write about a life experience and incorporate their Spanish vocabulary.

Funded Mar 30, 2023Thank you so much for contributing to my reading project.
We started the project on Friday, September 8. Each student will have the opportunity to increase their understanding of latin culture by reading two novels. On Fridays, we will read and discuss these stories. At the end of our reading, students will take an AR Test or complete a book review. They will also produce a creative project for the book - one pager, book bento, playlist, video booktalk.
We are so excited to get started!!!!!!”

Funded Aug 31, 2022Thank you so much for making this project possible. The books that were purchased through your donations have increased our knowledge of Latin culture in a fun and engaging way. We have enjoyed these novels. Students selected a novel then completed a two part project. They were required to complete the AR test for their chosen novel or they had to write a book review. The second part of the project required them to complete one of the following: a book playlist, a one pager, a book conference, or a book talk. Our class project will culminate with a virtual visit with author Dr. Ismèe Williams on March 1. Follwoing this event each student will select one of the novels to keep.”
