Color and Texture on a Tight Budget
Funded Aug 19, 2024Thank you so much for supporting our classroom! The students have just completed a pinch technique/hollow form project, in which they incorporated characteristics of a variety of animals and/or objects to create their own FANTASCTICAL ANIMAL. They made great use of the crystal glazes you provided to add texture and color to their pieces, as well as to develop their understanding of the Elements of Art; form, texture, color, line, an shape and how to utilize these to achieve visual balance and unity in their compositions.
We are now exploring the technique of soft slab, learning about drape molding, slump molding and wrapping around a cylinder to create a cup. They have learned about the Principle of Design, Pattern, and how it has been used on pottery across many cultures and times. They have also studied Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements and how they relate to the major cultural shifts brought about by the Industrial Revolution. Their final project for this unit will be to create a four piece place setting that incorporates a pattern inspired by either nature or industry/technology.
The glazes you provided allow them to apply their imaginations to their work well beyond what they could do with the limited resources we have here.”

Funded Nov 29, 2023Thank you so very much for providing these fabulous aprons to our classroom. They are sturdy and absorbent and so must better suited to working with water based materials, especially clay and glaze. The kids were so excited to receive them, as they care very much about their clothes and appearance at this age and these make it much easier to stay clean.
We have most recently been working on a stiff slab construction project, titled "Past, Present, Future." They are creating lidded boxes with the interior incorporating symbols of their childhood; the exterior walls incorporating symbols of who they are now; and the lid representing how they see themselves in the future.
Enclosed are some images of their practice pieces in progress and some stills from a thank you video we recorded.
Again, your generosity and support are SO appreciated!”

Funded Nov 8, 2023At the beginning of the year students learn about the nature of clay; where and how we get it; it's structural and chemical properties; how it is used in a wide variety of disciplines and industries. This allows students to make connections to geology, geography, design, and anthropology in addition to visual art. As an entree to our most recent project, "Fantastical Animals," we reviewed the periodic table and identified some of the elements that create some the colors we get in these glazes. This provided a great opportunity for the students to begin to understand some aspects of chemistry. In addition, these glazes expand students' ability to explore and develop their understanding of the elements of color, value, and texture in visual art.
The students have continued to be delighted with their access to these glazes. I hope you enjoy the images of their work that are provided!”

Funded Oct 28, 2022We have completed our first project using the crystal glazes you so generously provided through your donations. Students learned about the history of lanterns and their use in a variety of festivals and religious practices. As our school has a Mandarin immersion program, we focused most on the Chinese Lunar New Year and the Chinese Lantern Festival. The project was scheduled to coincide with this event.
Students learned about and utilized stiff slab construction techniques in clay and then created their own lanterns. We discussed the Elements of Art of positive and negative space, form and shape, color, and texture and how these are utilized in creating balance and unity in a composition The glazes were an important tool in exploring the elements of color and texture.
The students were very excited when they first saw the sample tiles I created and many of them made exceptional use of them in their pieces.
Again, we are all so grateful for the opportunity to use these special glazes in our work and look forward to using them again on future projects! .
A few photos of the finished pieces are included.”
