  • Composting School Lunch & Bringing Homework

    Funded Mar 8, 2023

When we got our composter, one of my Student Aide, who was a six grader assembled it with pride and joy. After it was assembled my students and I used it often composting our leftovers lunches and snacks. We learned all about composting. Since I moved to another school, I left the composter with the 4th grade teacher at Mccorkle that knew about composting.

The plastic homework folders were well used. One of the grandparents said, "my granddaughter knows were her homework is and were to put it." Unfortunately, I do not have any pictures to share.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Afewerki

My 2nd Grade Blossoming Scholars and I are grateful for your generous gifts of support.

How did the 2nd Grade Blossoming Scholars use your precious gifts?

:-)During their daily reading time (30 – 45 minutes), they read the books you bought for them about their human body, eating healthy, being kind, learning about great heroes, and facts around the world.

:-)One of my students who struggled with reading, has been reading "Kindness is my Superpower" almost daily and took it home so she can practice reading it. She wants to read the book to the class.

:-)20 out of 24 students of my students know how to jump rope, compared to only 6 out of 24 at the beginning of the year. Twice a week for about 45 minutes, they have the opportunity to physically move and collaborate with their classmate or other classes using the different jump ropes and obstacle course materials you bought for them.

:-)After reading the books about fruits, vegetables, and eating healthy that you bought for them; watching videos about vitamins and minerals, and having once a month parts of plants party, most of my student (23 out of 24) are willing to try different parts of plants.

:-)One of my students who refused to try any type of vegetables at the beginning of the year, and only ate watermelon and bananas for fruits has been willing to try different types of fruits & vegetables. Now he says, "I like eating healthy."

:-)Daily, my students or other students around the school use the grabbers to pick up trash around the playground and the school. They take pride in keeping the playground clean.

:-)During their "Learning Rotation" the puzzles have been used by table teams to collaborate or individual students to help them focus with the task at hand.

:-)The Accurate Shipping Scale 440-660lbs helped my class to win first place in our Science Fair project, "Lunchtime Food Waste" at the Southern Arizona Science and Engineering Foundation (SARSEF). They used the scale to weigh the amount of lunchtime food waste for 9 classes within 6 days.

:-)If you had a chance to visit my class, the 2nd Grade Blossoming Scholars would say to you, "2, 4, 6, 8 WHO DO WE APPRECIATE? OUR DONORS, OUR DONORS, OUR DONORS!"”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Afewerki
