  • Building a Community One Word at a Time

    Funded Oct 1, 2023

I am writing this letter to express my sincere appreciation for fulfilling my Donors Choose grant titled, 'Building a Community, One Word at a Time.'

Since receiving our magnetic letters students have enjoyed having their own set to make and blend words. Students have learned more about community helpers, thus building their vocabulary and writing skills.

We are fortunate to have these learning tools in our classroom. Again, thank you for providing magnetic letters to help my students make words.

We appreciate your generosity and thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Baldin

  • Making Words With Magnetic Letters

    Funded Oct 11, 2023

I am writing this letter to express my sincere appreciation for fulfilling my Donors Choose grant titled, 'Making Words with Magnetic Letters.'

Through your generosity, we have 12-sets of magnetic letters for students to use with a partner or in small groups. We use magnetic letters during our phonics lessons by having students push magnetic letters to help them say each letter-sound in a word and blend the sounds together. Magnetic letters can be used in so many ways, and my students get so excited when we use them.

We are fortunate to have these learning tools to help us make words. Again, thank you for providing magnetic letters for our classroom.

We appreciate your generosity and thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Baldin

  • Let's Collaborate and Listen!

    Funded Sep 21, 2023

I am writing this letter to express my sincere appreciation for fulfilling my Donors Choose grant titled, 'Let's Collaborate and Listen!'

Since receiving our vertical white boards and clipboards, we move about the classroom collaborating throughout the day. Students enjoy working with a partner or in a small group. They enjoy the opportunity to work with their peers to solve problems.

We are fortunate to have these learning tools to help us collaborate with one another. Again, thank you for providing vertical white boards and clipboards for our classroom.

We appreciate your generosity and thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”

  • Headphones for Everyone!

    Funded Sep 11, 2023

I am writing this letter to express my sincere appreciation for fulfilling my Donors Choose grant titled, Headphones for Everyone. My classroom is a 1:1 iPad classroom, where each of my students have access to an iPad in which to complete daily tasks. Students use various apps to practice basic math facts and high frequency words, as well as websites that include thousands of books at their fingertips. Students can use their iPads to create and publish books and create video presentations to share with others. Honestly, the ideas are endless when it comes to technology!!

As I walk around my classroom visiting with students as they are using their iPads, I noticed that the classroom didn't seem calm and relaxed....I was missing a key component, headphones!! As part of the supply list, I had requested that my students bring earbuds or headphones at the beginning of the school year. Many of my students purchased earbuds, which were the cheaper option, but we soon found out that the earbuds did not fit my students' ears. I would purchase cheap headphones that I knew wouldn't last, but at least it would provide some peace and quiet in the classroom. I am so thankful that my grant was funded to be able to purchase headphones that fit my second graders. As students work away on their iPads, I can meet with small groups of students helping them better understand a concept in a peaceful environment.

Headphones aren't just for iPad use, we also use them for independent reading. Students are asked to read independently for 20-30 minutes each day. While students are reading, I meet with small groups to focus on a specific reading strategy. In order for my other students to concentrate, they usually wear their headphones to keep them focused on their reading.

We are so fortunate to have quality headphones for all my students. Again, thank you for providing us with the peaceful opportunities to be able to focus and complete our best work. We appreciate your generosity and thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Baldin

  • Wobble, Wobble, Wobble!

    Funded Aug 2, 2023

Thank you so much for the generous gift! The wobble seats have been a welcomed addition to our classroom. Students that have had difficulty remaining seated and/or able to stay seated for any length of time have really benefitted. The wobble seats have helped my students decrease their need to fidget, therefore, improved their focus. With improved focus comes more time on task. Thank you for providing my classroom with opportunities for flexible seating. We appreciate you and your generosity, thank you!”

  • Read All About It!

    Funded Dec 18, 2022

I am writing this letter to express my sincere appreciation for fulfilling my Donors Choose grant titled, 'Read All About It!' I was hopeful that we would have received our Scholastic News subscription this school year, however, because the order was placed mid-year we were not able to receive our magazines. Although I was dissapointed, I am looking forward to using these high-interest magazines with my students for the 2023-2024 school year.

Scholastic News inspires a lifelong love for reading and learning! The topics that are covered each week are in great detail and relevant to our grade level. In the past, my students have enjoyed the seasonal topics that coincide with our curriculum. I already have access to the 2023-2024 planning calendar for the upcoming topics, as a teacher this is exciting!! Not only will students have a magazine in their hands, but this subscription gives them digital access. This allows them to have access to the current content and activities, but to past issues, videos and online activities.

Again, thank you for providing this opportunity for my future students. We appreciate your generosity and thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Baldin

  • Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead!

    Funded Dec 25, 2021

I am writing this letter to express my sincere appreciation for fulfilling my Donors Choose grant titled, 'Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead!" I am so thankful that my students are able to continue to grow their understanding of engineering.

My 2nd graders were invited to a 2-week field trip to a local health and science museum in our home town. The purpose of the field trip was to introduce them to the field of engineering. This was such a valuable experience and through this Donors Choose opportunity, my students are able to continue to use math and science to solve problems with a hands-on approach. Students have enjoyed working together to design, create and put their ideas into motion through the LEGO STEAM Park you graciously funded.

Our class is fortunate to have a this opportunity at our fingertips. Not only do we use it as a part of our math and science curriculum, but students create and build during inside recess. I enjoy listening and watching them work together. We appreciate your generosity and thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”

  • iPads Need Protected!

    Funded Sep 23, 2021

I am writing this letter to express my sincere appreciation for fulfilling my Donors Choose grant titled, 'iPads Need Protected'. I am so thankful that my students are able to carry their iPads to and from school safely.

Each day my students set off to school with their backpacks that include their binder, daily planner, and iPad. Upon arriving to school, they unpack these items and place them in their desks to use throughout the school day. They absolutely love having an iPad case that protects their iPad from possible 'accidents' that typical 7 and 8 years olds may have on a given day.

It is important that our school iPads are well taken care of so our students can continue to benefit from these devices. I have numbered each iPad case to match the number on their iPad. At the end of the school year, both the iPad and iPad case will be returned for future students to use.

We are so fortunate to have these iPad cases for all of my students. We appreciate your generosity and thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”

I have 25 second grade students this school year and we engage in various activities. We enjoy using our iPads to learn, making and trying foods that go along with our themes, going on field trips, reader's theater, and other projects that keep learning interesting. Over 90% of our students come from low-income homes and often do not get to experience what you and I did when we were growing up.
